‘My family decided to increase 3-day vacation to 9 days; too expensive, should I just skip?’ — Netizen

A netizen who was tight on funds, especially after his family decided to increase a three-day vacation to a nine-day one, took to social media asking others if he should just skip the trip altogether.

In an anonymous post to popular confessions page SGWhispers on Wednesday (Sep 7), the netizen wrote that his family wanted to visit Malaysia and had a long list of places they wanted to go to. They had planned to cross three states and stay in three different hotels.

“I initially agreed to go because they say it’ll be a 3 days trip to Cameron Highlands to enjoy some cold air. But who knows now it becomes a 8-9 days trip to 3 states! The trip expenses is now almost tripled! I didn’t plan to spend so much visiting a country I have visited multiple times and this time round, we aren’t really going to new places, just that same old few places. The food there is good but the lodging have gone up”, the netizen wrote.

The netizen said that he wanted to ask his family to reduce the number of states, but feared that his father would “just criticize me again for not having a higher paying job and not saving enough”.

He added that during his last family trip (pre-Covid), he had just started his degree. His family had also planned a trip Malaysia and despite the netizen saying that he wanted it to be shorter for him to be able to save money, “my father just went ahead with it (paying for my share of lodging of 3 days) at the last stop.

“But then throughout the trip he keep getting sarcastic over it and even say I am a freeloader. The trip was just a nightmare for me and I couldn’t buy anything without him nagging! Worst is, I cannot have a say on the decision of meals/cuisines, especially on the last stop. Even after I told him I will transfer him the money once we get back in Singapore, he didn’t stop!”

The netizen wondered if he should skip the trip altogether. Here’s what netizens said:
