Singapore – Tray Return standees were spotted defaced with used entry stickers, prompting a call from authorities for members of the public to discard them properly.
“Spotted at some hawker centres: the Tray Return standees sporting some extra ‘decorations,’” wrote Facebook page Clean and Green Singapore (CGS).
CGS is a campaign started by the National Environment Agency (NEA) to inspire Singaporeans to care for and protect common spaces and the environment by adopting a clean, green and sustainable lifestyle.
In its post, CGS included photos of the standees. One had so many stickers that the reminder to return trays and crockery was completely covered.
Following the incident, CGS called on the public to avoid using the standees for such purposes.
“We would like to seek patrons’ cooperation to paste their used entry stickers onto the boards provided instead of the standees,” said CGS.
“Not only are the defaced standees unsightly, much time and effort are needed to repair the defaced standees. Thank you!”
Members from the online community wondered if the stickers should stop being issued instead.
“The stickers are just such a waste and a display of lack of civic-mindedness,” said a netizen, while another noted the problem would be solved if the stickers weren’t issued to begin with.
“If we are so focused on clean and green and recycling, why are we wasting so much paper on the stickers?” a netizen asked.
This is not the first time entry stickers were discarded incorrectly.
The stickers were found on the rubber handle of an escalator at Water Point in September last year.
“The poor cleaners (often old aunties and uncles) will have much difficulties getting it off,” said the concerned individual who spotted inconsiderate practice.
He noted that there was a designated board right outside the food court for the stickers, or they could be dumped properly in the rubbish bin./TISG
