EU chiefs sign Brexit deal ahead of parliamentary vote

Brussels’ two top officials, the presidents of the European Commission and the European Council, signed off on Britain’s EU divorce agreement Friday.

With Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel’s formal endorsement, the text will now go to the European Parliament on Wednesday, January 29 for ratification.

On Thursday, diplomats from the EU member states will approve the deal in writing. Then, on Friday, January 31, Britain spends its last day in the EU before leaving the bloc at 2300 GMT as clocks strike midnight in Brussels.

Then, on Thursday, diplomats from the EU member states will approve the deal in writing, ensuring Britain’s orderly departure at 2300 GMT Friday as clocks tick into Saturday in Brussels.

“Charles Michel and I have just signed the Agreement on the Withdrawal of the UK from the EU, opening the way for its ratification by the European Parliament,” Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen tweeted.

In a separate tweet, Michel said: “Things will inevitably change but our friendship will remain. We start a new chapter as partners and allies.”

And he added, in French: “I’m keen to write this new page together.”

Official photographs of the official signing ceremony, conducted before dawn in the European Council’s headquarters in Brussels, showed chief EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier looking on.

British voters backed leaving the European Union in a June 2016 referendum, and after lengthy negotiations and several delays Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s new government plans to “get Brexit done” next week.

Queen Elizabeth II gave her formal assent to the British withdrawal legislation on Thursday and the European Union is now expected to complete the final formalities in the coming days.

Briatin will the leave the institutions of the union, reducing it to 27 member member states, but the withdrawal agreement provides for an 11-month transition period until the end of the year.

During this time, Britain and the rest of the bloc will continue to apply the same rules of business to avoid economic disruption while officials try to negotiate a broader trade deal.

Most experts regard the idea that London and Brussels could agree a comprehensive free trade agreement in that time as ambitious, but officials have expressed optimism that some kind of agreement can be reached.

Formal trade talks are not expected to begin until the end of February or even March, and in the meantime Barnier has been in intensive talks with EU member states on his negotiating mandate.

After the transition, Britain wants the right to set its own rules in areas such as workers’ rights and environmental standards.

But Brussels has warned that the more the UK diverges from EU standards, the less it will have unfettered access to Europe’s huge single market.

And a comprehensive free trade agreement of the type the European Union has signed with Canada could take years to negotiate.

Year of Rat hails easy ride for Trump but bumps for Harry and Meghan

As the world prepares to welcome the Year of the Rat, feng shui masters predict a lucky year for Donald Trump, but warn Harry and Meghan’s futures are less certain as they make a bid for freedom.

Both the US President and the Sussexes have begun 2020 with a bang.

The former is facing down an impeachment trial — and seeking re-election in November — while the latter are beginning a new chapter in Canada after consciously uncoupling from the gilded but pressured career of being a working British royal.

But if experts in the field of Chinese horoscopes are to be believed, it is the US president that will have the easier journey this year.

“Trump has a prosperous destiny,” Gao Yu-lin, a feng shui expert from Taiwan told AFP, after consulting his copy of “I Ching” — the ancient Chinese divination book used by many fortune-tellers.

“His destiny is like a ‘child of heaven’ which leans towards a safe, smooth ride and he can overcome all hindrances,” Gao added.

Wang Hsin-yi, who based her predictions from a divination system used in temples dedicated to the popular sea goddess Mazu, agreed that the stars are suggesting a second Trump term.

“Trump has good fortune in 2020 and will achieve new feats. He can turn bad luck into good luck and chances are good he will succeed in what he wants.”

Tsai Shang-chi, a Taipei based fortune-teller, is a little more cautious.

“Trump’s fortunes are largely enhanced in 2020 which is favourable for his campaign,” he told AFP.

“But whether he can be re-elected or not will also depend of the fortunes of his challengers.”

‘Family harmony’
Things are less clear cut for Harry and Meghan.

The couple have set up a new home on Vancouver Island following their shock exit from life as working royals but the road ahead is bumpy.

Wang said she worries about the physical distance the pair have created between them and the British royal family.

“Harry and Meghan need to think things through and take it easy for family harmony, if they are alone they can’t get what they wish for and will cause worry for themselves,” she said.

“They can’t live far from their family or things won’t go well,” she added.

Gao said 2020 looked fairly prosperous for the couple but he warned problems could appear in later years.

“They need to be careful in 2023 for saying the wrong words and doing the wrong things or their image could drop to rock bottom,” he said.

Tsai said the stars showed Meghan’s influence over her husband would be more pronounced in 2020.

“Meghan could make wrong financial decisions to cause losses and increase financial pressure on Harry,” he predicted.

“They could still sustain their lives financially in 2020 but it might deal a blow to their relationship.”

Wily rodent
The Lunar New Year is the most important festival in the Chinese calendar, marked with a fortnight of festivities as reunited families wrap dumplings and exchange gifts and red envelopes stuffed with money.

It is also a moment when many get new horoscopes for the year ahead.

Feng shui — literally meaning “wind-water” — is influential in many parts of Asia, where people adjust their lives and carefully position items such as a cup of water or pieces of crystal in offices and homes to maximise their luck and wealth.

The philosophy says that all events are dictated by the varying balances in the five elements that make up the universe: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth.

The Chinese zodiac switches yearly between twelve animals who adopt a different elemental attribute each time they come around, which soothsayers then use to make predictions.

This week’s Lunar New Year welcomes the arrival of the “metal rat”.

While the rat might not be the most aesthetic of the Chinese zodiac animals it is nonetheless prized as a symbol of reproductive success, wealth and intelligence.

It is also the first animal on the Chinese zodiac, making its arrival a little like the start of a new decade.

Legend says that the wily rodent earned its pole position because it hitched a ride on the back of the ox to the Jade Emperor’s palace and then jumped down to cross the finish line before all the others.

The last time the world celebrated the Year of the Rat was 2008.

It was a huge moment of optimism for China as Beijing hosted a lavish Olympic game. But the year also witnessed the global financial crash which still reverberates to this day.

This year, the emergence of a mysterious and deadly virus in mainland China is already taking the shine off festivities.

No qualms for India’s hangman before first job of executing rapists

by Aishwarya KUMAR

Pawan Kumar feels zero sympathy for the four men he is due to hang next month for a 2012 gang rape and murder that appalled India.

“The people who are going to die are like beasts, not humans,” the third-generation hangman and father-of-seven told AFP in his tiny flat in the northern town of Meerut.

“They are cruel people and that’s why they are going to lose their lives,” the 54-year-old said.

The group set to meet their demise before dawn on February 1 — although it may be delayed — were convicted for a brutal crime against Jyoti Singh, a 23-year-old student.

They took turns to sexually assault the woman with an iron rod on a bus as it meandered through the streets of Delhi at night. They then dumped her on a road.

She died two weeks later in a Singapore hospital from extensive internal injuries.

Angry demonstrations by tens of thousands of people broke out across the vast South Asian nation, sparking soul-searching about the plight of Indian women and leading to heavier sentences for sex crimes.

Grisly details
Five people were convicted. One, a minor, was found guilty and spent three years in a juvenile detention centre. A sixth, the ringleader of the group, died in jail before the case concluded — officially by suicide.

For the remaining men, very few in India have expressed misgivings about their fate.

Indeed, celebrations are expected to mark their executions and Indian media have been gleefully reporting grisly details about the preparations at Delhi’s Tihar Jail.

Banana will be smeared on the execution ropes to soften them and ensure a smooth and quick hanging, and the men reportedly broke down when their necks were measured for the noose.

Almost 400 people are on death row in India, but no-one has been executed since 2015.

Kumar has been in high demand for media interviews, and AFP’s allotted 20 minutes ended abruptly when an alarm on his mobile phone signalled time was up.

“I have people from India and abroad who want to talk to me. You’re not the only ones,” he said as his armed bodyguard looked on.

‘Guru’ grandfather
Kumar comes from generations of hangmen but this will be his first execution.

His grandfather, who he fondly describes as his “guru”, hanged former prime minister Indira Gandhi’s assassins and two men over a notorious 1982 kidnap and murder.

Kumar complains that his stipend of 5,000 rupees (US$70) a month is hardly enough to support his family, forcing him to look to others, including the media, for “help”.

But he says the adoration he expects to bask in from India’s 1.3 billion people after the coming executions will go some way to compensate.

“People around me, including my family, have always treated me well, but after this execution, I’m certain respect for me will increase,” he said.

And he has no qualms about the job he does, which he expects his sons to continue, nor about the effectiveness of capital punishment.

“Crimes will decrease only when there are executions. You give them life imprisonment, they appeal and they come out only to commit more crimes,” he said.

“People like them should be executed so others can learn a lesson that doing such things will give them an end like this.”

Angelina Jolie unaffected by Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston’s reunion at SAG Awards

It is no secret that Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston used to be married to each other. Brad Pitt then moved on to Angelina Jolie but that marriage did not work out either. Recently at the SAG Awards, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were reunited so if you are wondering what was Angelina Jolie’s reaction to that, read on.

According to HollywoodLife, Angelina Jolie was unperturbed about Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston’s reunion. Jolie saw Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston holding hands backstage at the ceremony and it did not bother her.

A source said that Jolie does not care about Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston’s reunion because she knows that they are just friends.

In September 2016, Pitt and Jolie called it quits but their divorce has not been finalised. Nevertheless, they are legally single under California law. Jolie feels unaffected by the reunion. After Aniston’s 50th birthday party, Pitt reportedly started hanging out again in February 2019.

Keeping a low profile, Pitt attended Aniston’s Christmas party in December last year. Since their divorce in 2005, the SAG Awards reunion was the first time they were photographed together. At the awards, Pitt had won for his role in Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood, while Aniston won for The Morning Show. The photos were taken after they won and they looked happy to be around each other.

Fans of Aniston and Pitt were ecstatic when they saw photos of Pitt holding Aniston’s hand. She also looked like she had a finger curled under his lapel. Nobody knows if there was anything happening between them romantically.

A source said that the Angelina/Brad/Jennifer discourse has gone on for long enough and that Jolie has moved on from that.

During the awards, Pitt made a joke saying that he was a guy who gets high, takes his shirt off and does not get along with his wife. He also joked that he was going to add SAG Award winner to his Tinder profile.

Jolie is keeping a level-head by not reading about herself online. She is just focused on her children and work.

SIA to take on Emirates and Etihad for India-Europe-US market

Singapore Airlines, through its Indian joint venture Vistara, is beefing up its fleet to take on Emirates and Etihad Airways, according to Bloomberg on Thursday.

The latter two now dominate flights between India and Europe and the United States.

Bloomberg says the airline is considering ordering more aircraft from Boeing to serve destinations as far away as the United States. It adds that the carrier is also weighing the purchase of more A320neo-family planes from Airbus, including the longest-range A321XLR model.

On Tuesday, Vistara launched its first overseas service between New Delhi and Singapore. It has top Indian conglomerate Tata Group as its majority shareholder.

India is seen as one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in the world. The International Air Transport Association says the country’s air passenger numbers will more than triple by 2037. It says 63 million people flew out of India last year, two-thirds of them on foreign airlines.

SIA is targeting this lucrative pool. A spokesman for the airline told Reuters that Vistara is a key element of its multi-hub strategy and that the launch of international operations from India offered additional opportunities to SIA.

However, he declined to comment on the competition. Emirates, too, declined to comment.

Emirates is often dubbed the “unofficial national carrier of India”. It controlled almost 15% of the to-and-from market last year.

SIA will have to battle it out in the notoriously price-sensitive Indian market, although international routes are profitable, as shown by Emirates and Etihad.

Yahoo SG complies with correction order issued under POFMA, amends Facebook post

Singapore—News outfit Yahoo Singapore has complied with the correction order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday (Jan 22).

Channel NewsAsia (CNA) reports that based on its edit history, Yahoo Singapore amended a post on Facebook it had shared containing allegations from a human rights group in Malaysia that Singapore’s Changi Prison carried out “brutal” execution methods by adding a correction notice to the post after the direction had been issued at the instruction of Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam.

The correction direction had been issued under the country’s law against online falsehoods, POFMA (Protection From Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act).

CNA quotes a representative from Verizon Media, the owner of Yahoo, as saying, “People around the world rely on Yahoo as a credible and trusted news provider and we will not shy away from that responsibility.

We are a trusted platform and media brand, and believe strongly in unbiased reporting and credible news coverage.”

Local activist Kirsten Han, who had also shared the news from Malaysia’s Lawyers for Liberty (LFL), also complied with the correction order.

Ms Han amended her post to say, “CORRECTION NOTICE: This Facebook post contains false statements of fact made by Lawyers for Liberty. The Singapore Prison Service does not use any of the steps in the alleged procedure for judicial executions.

Under POFMA, I’m legally required to append the above correction notice to this post.

I originally shared this post because the allegations that were made by Lawyers For Liberty, concerning a process about which very little information is publicly available, were extremely serious and disturbing.”

She added, “In the interests of dealing with ‘fake news’, I hope that government and public agencies can be more responsive to queries from journalists and/or civil society groups when they are seeking information that can clarify matters.”

Ms Han wrote that she had asked for a comment from the Singapore Prison Service regarding LFL’s claims, but she did not get an answer.

As for The Online Citizen (TOC), it wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Jan 22), “TOC received a POFMA correction direction from the Minister of Home Affairs this morning, and has filed an application to the minister to cancel the direction.

The minister has three days to consider the application before TOC can take the matter to the court.”

In a statement released on Wednesday (Jan 22) the Ministry of Home Affairs said, “MHA states categorically that the statement by Malaysia-based Lawyers for Liberty (“LFL”) on 16 January 2020 contains untrue, baseless and preposterous allegations about the use of unlawful methods in judicial executions conducted in Changi Prison.”

MHA clarified that all executions are carried out in strict compliance with the law and that the Superintendent of the Prison and a medical doctor are present during all executions. Furthermore, as the law dictates, the Coroner always conducts an inquiry 24 hours after executions are done in order to make sure that they were carried out in the proper manner.

The statement further clarified that “the rope used for judicial executions has never broken before, and prison officers certainly do not receive any ‘special training to carry out the brutal execution method’ as alleged. Any acts such as those described in the LFL statement would have been thoroughly investigated and dealt with.”

According to MHA, “LFL has been publishing various falsehoods to seek attention in hopes of getting Malaysian prisoners, who have been convicted of drug trafficking and sentenced to death in Singapore, off the death penalty.” -/TISG

Putin: Singapore not appropriate model for the leadership transition in Russia

0
Vladimir_Putin - Wikipedia

President Vladimir Putin does not think Singapore could be a model for the leadership transition in Russia.

Speaking at a televised meeting with students in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, he was asked whether his country should consider the Singapore model.

Mr Putin, 67, said that it was not appropriate for his country but asked the student: “You want me to be Minister Mentor?”

Last week, Russia announced a shake-up of its political system, fuelling speculation that Mr Putin might want to consolidate his grip on power even after he completes another term as President in 2024.

Observers and critics say Mr Putin would want to be a dominant figure in the political affairs of the country beyond 2024, according to the South China Morning Post.

After serving as Prime Minister and Senior Minister, Lee Kuan Yew became Minister Mentor. Although it was an advisory position, some saw it as a means for him to keep a grip on Cabinet decisions.

Mr Putin had praise for Lee.

In reply to the student, he said: “He was an outstanding man … That’s true, he was, I don’t know, around 30 years in power, and he founded the country, that’s true … You want me to be the Minister Mentor?

“What you propose, would undermine the institution of the Presidency. I think that for such a country as Russia this is not applicable.”

Mr Putin is the dominant figure in Russian politics. He served as President from 2000 to 2008 and Prime Minister from 2008 to 2012.

He was elected President again in 2012 and in 2018.

“Could you please leave me out of this?” – Hongyi tells Shengwu

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s son Li Hongyi has asked his paternal cousin Li Shengwu to leave him out of grievances with the Singapore authorities, in a Facebook post published on Thursday night (23 Jan).

Shengwu announced that he is removing Hongyi from his Facebook friends list on Wednesday (22 Jan). The US-based academic, who has been embroiled in a contempt of court lawsuit brought on by the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) over a private Facebook post that was leaked by one of his Facebook friends, said that he will no longer be participating in the legal proceedings due to the AGC’s conduct.

He added: “I will continue to be active on Facebook, and will continue to regard my friends-only Facebook posts as private. However, I have removed my cousin Li Hongyi from my Facebook friends list.”

Shengwu and Hongyi were once described as “very close” and drew heightened attention when they delivered eulogies at their grandfather, founding Prime Minister’s Lee Kuan Yew’s funeral in 2015.

Cracks in their relationship, however, became public in 2017 — the year that the Lee family feud spilled into the public domain and the year that the Government initiated legal action against Shengwu over a private Facebook post that was made during the family feud.

In December 2017, Shengwu revealed that he was no longer on speaking terms with Hongyi but that they remained Facebook friends. One publication reported that Shengwu wore a “bitter smile” as he said: “We are no longer on speaking terms, but he is still among my Facebook friends, I did not remove him.”

In response to Shengwu’s most recent revelation that he has decided to remove Hongyi from his Facebook friends list, the Prime Minister’s son wrote on Facebook: “I don’t know whats going on between you and the government, but I’ve got nothing to do with it. Could you please leave me out of this?”

Claiming that he has “really tried to not be involved as far as possible,” Hongyi said: “If there’s something I’ve done that’s led you to believe otherwise, I would be happy to talk with you about it. It’s a bit disconcerting to be repeatedly publicly accused of undermining democracy without understanding why.”

He added: “I would prefer not to have done this over public facebook posts. But I suppose thats (sic) how we communicate nowadays.”

Although the exact origins of the rift between them remain unclear, there is speculation that their relationship fractured around the time the Oxley Road dispute broke out between Lee Kuan Yew’s children in 2017.

That year, Lee Hsien Yang and his sister Lee Wei Ling accused their elder brother, PM Lee, of using state organs against them and of abusing his power to preserve their family home against their father’s willed desire to demolish the house, in order to bolster his grip on power.

The younger siblings also accused PM Lee of grooming Hongyi for politics. Hongyi responded to the allegations and claimed that he really had no interest in politics.

Shengwu, however, pointed out that Hongyi’s comments on a potential entry into Singapore politics were “vague”. He told the press: “He only said he has no interest in politics, but my uncle Lee Hsien Loong also once said he wasn’t interested in politics when he was in his 20s. These words can easily be taken back.”

PM Lee later cleared himself of the charges that his siblings levelled against him in Parliament -– an arena where his siblings had no opportunity to speak for themselves. He added that he would not sue his siblings for defamation as doing so would “besmirch” his parents’ names.

Despite a ceasefire that the younger siblings have offered, the family appears to remain estranged. -/TISG

Nursing home employee gets jail, caning for molesting half-paralysed resident

Singapore—An employee at a nursing home was sentenced to jail on Wednesday (Jan 22) after previously being acquitted for molesting a bed-ridden resident.

The male employee was reportedly hired to do housekeeping and maintenance work in the nursing home.

The incident happened on November 26, 2016.

According to the eyewitness account of a nurse at the home, she heard a cry of pain coming from the victim’s (55) bed.

The nurse was “shocked” to see that the accused (32) had his pants down and was mounting the victim whose diaper has been exposed as she cried on the bed.

The victim could not move because the left side of her body and face was paralysed.

The accused committed the sexual assault in a room full of other patients who were suffering from dementia.

The nurse called for help and reported the incident to another nursing aide. At the time of the incident, other residents were attending a community development event elsewhere.

During the court hearing, the accused denied any wrongdoing. He argued that he went to the room because one of the residents asked him for help with the television. Then, he claimed he was merely adjusting the victim’s pillows as he mounted himself on top of her.

In 2018, the accused was initially convicted and sentenced to 22 months jail and three strokes of the cane.

However, his appeal was approved by Justice Aedit Abdullah who said the nurse’s eyewitness account was “not strong enough” to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt as reported by Today.

On Wednesday (Jan 22), Chief Justice Menon ruled that the accused’s account was inconsistent with the sequence of events according to the CCTV footage.

The accused was also tall enough to adjust the victim’s pillow without having to mount her on the bed.

He is now sentenced to 16 months in jail along with three strokes of the cane.-/TISG
