Singapore — In an expletive-filled video, a man not wearing a mask took the opportunity to scold a Minister who “never take care of Singaporeans”, and aired many other of his grievances relating to jobs and his low income.

The video, circulating on WhatsApp messenger on Thursday (Jun 24) showed the elderly man, clad in a black polo t-shirt, khaki shorts, and slippers, looking at his phone while ranting.

It was not clear if he was scolding another passenger on the train, or if he had read something on his phone and was reacting to it. The man had also removed his mask and was holding it in his hand.

At the start of the 1-minute-30-second long clip, the man could even be seen trying to show his phone to a passenger seated closest to him, but that man had his eyes closed.

7 seconds into the clip, the man could be heard saying: “The mortgage loan, how to pay? You go and pay for me lah. I’m a Singaporean, you think what? (sic)”.

He added: “I’m a low-income (sic), I stay (in) Woodlands flat”.

“Why you call so much Chinamen come and work here? Singaporeans jobless”, he added.

Practically every sentence in English was punctuated with Hokkien vulgarities.

“You minister?” the man continued, “You never take care of Singaporeans”.

“You want to arrest me or not? You come my house arrest me, I want to go back already”, the man challenged.

At the end of the video, he repeated a few more times that he was a Singaporean and that Singaporeans were jobless. Looking at his phone, he then said: “You Malaysian? China? Laugh laugh. I kill you later you know”.

It is unclear when the video was taken.

In the beginning of May, a 39-year-old man who refused to wear a mask while on the MRT train was arrested by the police for allegedly causing a public nuisance and flouting safe distancing measures.

First-time offenders who breach laws under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) Act can be jailed for up to six months and fined up to $10,000.
