SINGAPORE: An employer took to social media to reach out to other Indonesian helpers after her maid’s husband contacted her.

In an anonymous post to a support group, the woman wrote that her helper’s husband sent her a message on WhatsApp. “I received WhatsApp message from my helper husband to inform me that he’s her husband. I immediately blocked him. My helper husband suspected she is having a bf in Singapore and wanted her to go back. She told me she doesn’t have a bf here”, the woman wrote.

She continued: “She’s worried that he might deliver something nasty to my house which I don’t think he can find my address but she said he has the capability to find out. He found my phone number because my helper shared her Google account with her husband, that’s why he got my number by checking her contacts. She’ll want to go back if her husband threaten her again”.

The employer shared that her maid was a good worker and said that she wanted her helper to continue working for her. “Do you think her husband is able to locate her in Singapore? My previous helper who worked for me 3 years also experienced similar problems. Her husband suspected she has a bf and divorce her if she doesn’t go back!” the woman wrote.

Here’s what netizens commented on her post:

Earlier this year, a foreign domestic helper who ran away with her boyfriend after working for only three months left her employers to pay the remainder of her loan to the agency.

In an anonymous post to a Facebook group about the working conditions of domestic helpers, the maid’s employer asked others for help and advice. The employer wrote that the maid had worked with them for three months and added that her main task on weekdays was to look after their 9-month-old child. She added that she had two other children in the upper primary but they were sent to childcare after school.

The woman added that her mother or mother-in-law would stay over sometimes, especially if her children were unwell, to be of added assistance to her helper. She explained that her helper would only clean the house on weekends when she was home, so she would take over the duty of looking after her children. When it came to working conditions, the woman said that she allowed her maid to use her phone at night but had to return it to her the next morning. Her maid would often nap when the woman’s baby sleeps in the afternoon, but she does not scold her for doing so, the woman added.
