A middle-aged man propositioned a child who was his neighbour to perform a sexual act and prompted the scared youngster to ask a supermarket employee for help.

The supermarket employee and her supervisor told off the man and helped the child, and she later filed a police report against the man.

The child and the man lived in the same HDB block and she told  the court she used to think him “friendly and caring,” CNA reported.

The man was arrested after the incident which happened on Jan 10, 2020.

On Tuesday (Mar 15), the man, now 53, pleaded guilty in the State Courts to one charge of attempted sexual exploitation of a child, with an additional charge of the use of criminal force to be considered in his sentencing.

On the day of the incident, at around 6 pm, she was on her way to tuition when she met him in the lift of their housing block and they walked towards a nearby grocery store

There, he asked her if she needed money. She said no. He kept repeating the same question and eventually, she said yes.. He led her to another block, where they stopped by  a bicycle bay. Then he cupped her face with his hands,

She was irritated at being touched  without  permission. He made an indirect suggestion about a sexual act several times, but she did not understand.

She broke away and told him she was late for her lesson. He followed her back to the grocery, and bought her a drink, then asked her to follow him to a public area.

When they got there, he again alluded to the sexual act, and then, more directly, told the girl to perform a sex act. She was frightened, offended, annoyed and disgusted.

She responded, “What?”  He answered: “How much do you want?” reported CNA.

Growing even more frightened as she understood his intent more clearly, she began to walk away, but he followed her. She went up to an employee who was outside the grocery shop, telling the woman that the man was bothering her. When the employee asked if he was her father, the girl said no.

He told the woman that he had just bought a drink for the girl and then tried to touch her, but was blocked. The staff member told the man to leave her alone, and then told  her supervisor what happened to the girl, who said  the man asked her to perform a sex act.

Both store employee and her supervisor sensed the girl’s fear and the supervisor observed  that the child was trembling.

The supervisor walked the girl to the LRT and told her to scream if the man approached her again. The girl later filed a police report, and the man was arrested five days later.
