Save Our Street Dogs (SOSD), an organisation dedicated towards the welfare of local dogs has taken to Facebook to appeal for help from the public to contain a Parvovirus outbreak in one of their sites. SOSD said that they were actively sterilising dogs in that site when they discovered the illness had afflicted the dogs there.
Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious viral disease that can produce a life-threatening illness. The virus attacks rapidly dividing cells in a dog’s body, most severely affecting the intestinal tract. Parvovirus also attacks the white blood cells, and when young animals are infected, the virus can damage the heart muscle and cause lifelong cardiac problems.
“One month ago, we rescued 5 puppies, who came down with the illness. We worked hard to contain the disease at our shelter, and little did we know, that the nightmare was only beginning,” it said.
“After the 5 puppies, more and more dogs from the site fell ill. To date, a total of 14 dogs have been evacuated and treated. 4 did not make it. And 2 of them…are at the vet, fighting for their lives,” SOSD added
SOSD said that they are both emotionally and financially drained, with vet bills for Parvovirus alone, coming up to more than $40,000, and appealed to members of the public to give the affected dogs a fighting chance.
