MFA checking for Information on safety of Singaporeans in Orlando shooting

A heavily armed gunman opened fire in a packed gay nightclub in Orlando, a city in central Florida, USA, on Sunday killing 50 people. It is the deadliest shooting spree in the history of that country.
The gunman identified as 29-year-old Omar Mateen, an American citizen whose parents are from Afghanistan, was killed in a shootout with armed officers at around 5am on Sunday morning (US time).  He was armed with an assault-type rifle, a handgun and some sort of “suspicious device”, police said.
With its many attractions including Disney World, SeaWorld, and Universal Studios, Orlando remains a favourite destination for Singaporeans especially during the school holidays.
Acting Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean has said in his Facebook that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is checking for Information on the safety of fellow Singaporeans who may be holidaying there.
Saying that he is saddened by the loss of so many innocent lives Mr Teo said, “let us treasure the peace and harmony we enjoy in Singapore, and focus on the common humanity we share, rather than allow those with bad motives to divide us or create conflict.”
