Amid showers of both rain and admiration, the Workers’ Party’s National Day dinner in Hougang came alive on Saturday night (Aug 13). A beacon of unity and solidarity under the dark clouds, Raeesah Khan Pritam Singh and their fellow MPs made the event a memorable one, with songs, giveaways of umbrellas in WP blue, and radiant faces all around.

A whopping 1,400 people turned up for the annual event, affirming the WP’s standing in Singapore despite recent hurdles.

Secretary-general and Leader of the Opposition, Pritam Singh, expressed his pride in the WP to the press. Responding to questions about former MP Raeesah Khan (Sengkang GRC) who had stepped down late last year amid a scandal.

“I’m proud of the party and proud of how quickly we came together as one. That’s very important for a party like the Workers’ Party to remember,” he said, answering questions about former MP Raeesah Khan (Sengkang GRC), who stepped down late last year amid scandal, having admitted that she had lied in Parliament more than once.

Raeesah Khan, Singapore ex-MP, had admitted to lying in Parliament more than once, which led to a significant investigation from a Committee of Privileges. The scandal even drew the party’s leadership, including Pritam Singh, into the controversy, raising questions about its impact on the party’s recruitment of volunteers and candidates.

However, Pritam Singh’s steadfast belief in his party’s unity became evident when he said,

“If we are not united you will have a problem engaging the public and being persuasive to be a voice and to represent the opposition interest in Parliament effectively,” the party chief is quoted by CNA as saying. He dismissed concerns that the Raeesah Khan scandal had significantly affected the party’s morale or unity.

In Feb, the COP recommended that Ms Khan be given S$35,000 fine for having told falsehoods in Parliament on Aug 3 and Oct 4. It also concluded that the leaders of the WP also lied in relation to the complaint against Ms. Khan.

It found that she had acted under the direction of Mr Singh, and the party chair and vice-chair, Ms Sylvia Lim and Mr Faisal Manap, respectively.

When asked about whether the morale of the party was still affected by the scandal, Mr. Singh said, ”You can maybe take a look at the attendance at the event behind us, and also speak to various members of the public and members of the party who have attended to get a feel of that for yourself.”
