A woman called out many of the guys she had dated for making excuses in order to still be able to live at home with their parents.
In an anonymous post to popular confessions page SGWhispers, the woman wrote: “Is it really too much to refuse to date guys who still live at home with their parents? I get that it’s normal here for people to live at home well into their adult life, but it’s just not for me”.
She added that the guys would often give her excuses, such as:
“Housing is expensive and no one can afford to buy a home / waiting to BTO”
“It’s normal for guys to live at home so you just have to accept it”
“Why don’t you just go to a hotel room then?”
“My parents are fine with me bringing girls over”
She suggested that they could rent houses and added that she would “refuse to date guys who still live at home”. She also noted that she did not want to sneak around their parents or “do anything when their parents are RIGHT THERE IN THE SAME HOUSE. It’s wildly uncomfortable”.
There were some who called her a gold digger, or others who commented that her requirement was race-based. However, she added that it had nothing to do with money or race and noted that living on their own was a sign of independence.
“My experiences of dating guys who still live at home isn’t good. I’ve had guys try to sneak me into a completely dark house because it’s 2am and of course their parents are asleep. Guys who had to update their parents on their whereabouts, report when they leave, if they’re going to get back late. Guys who still let their parents/maid feed them, do their laundry, do their dishes, do all the house chores. Guys who tried to change a date location because their parents didn’t think it was a good idea”, she wrote, adding that since she started dating guys who lived on their own, she did not face any such issue.
The woman wrote that there was no other replacement for living alone. She did not consider wanting such a person as having high standards and commented that she was tired of drawing flak for it.
Netizens were divided in their response to her. Some even asked why the guy could not come over to her place if she was renting one.
Here’s what they said:
