Politics should be about helping people live better, says Anwar

YouTube screebgrab/ Full Interview with Malaysia’s Anwar Ibrahim

Malaysian PM-to-be, Anwar Ibrahim, lectured his party members in a convention in Malacca not to be power-hungry because politics should not be a tussle for power but a competition of ideas to help the people live better.

Speaking to at least 500 delegates, the Justice Party or PKR president said politicians should focus on the country’s development, but if the politicians are not steered by the right attitude, it will lead to greed among members.

“Politics is a competition of ideas, there has to be justice for all… We cannot use the power to steal money, make life easy for certain groups or do what is not right… there is no tolerance for corruption and power abuse,” he said.

He also said that power given by the people should be used to develop the economy, with the priority to eradicate poverty in particular.

“It has been 10 years the country’s economy is at stagnant growth, thus, the need to support (Prime Minister) Dr Mahathir (Mohamad) implement economic programmes. (sic) Harapan should be politically stable, there should not be any conspiracy here or there.

“If the economic growth remains stagnant, there will continue to be poverty and in the end, it’s the people who suffer. The rich get richer, but the poor become poorer,” he said.

Anwar’s party has been mired in gay-sex scandals and a perceived plot by some party members, including some ministers in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to stop him from becoming the next Prime Minister.

But Anwar won the support of a large majority of party division heads, which brought the internal tussle to an abrupt end.

Since he won the support of party leaders across the country, Anwar is consolidating his grip on the party by rallying grass root and division members behind him.

Nevertheless, his party is still rocked by uncertainty because some of the top leaders are openly supporting Dr Mahathir to remain as PM for a full term.

Azmin Ali, Minister of Economic Affairs who is embroiled in a gay-sex scandal has made it public that he wishes for Dr Mahathir to remain PM, indicating he is not in favour of Anwar taking over power. -/TISG

Rapper T.I. puts daughter through ‘virginity tests’

The 18-year-old daughter of American rapper T.I. has been subjected to annual “virginity tests” at the gynecologist and that sparked backlash from netizens.

T.I. revealed in a podcast that he takes Deyjah Harris to the gynecologist after each birthday to “check her hymen.”

“Usually like the day after the (birthday) party, she’s enjoying her gifts, I put a sticky note on the door: ‘Gyno. Tomorrow. 9:30,’” said T.I., whose real name is Clifford Harris.

Deyjah is required to sign a waiver to allow the doctor to share the “results” with her father.

The ‘virginity tests’ began after Deyjah’s sixteenth birthday.

On Tuesday, the episode of the ‘Ladies Like Us’ podcast was released but then it was removed on Wednesday afternoon when it went viral on social media.

Netizens criticised Harris for the tests and they were concerned for Deyjah.

“It’s extremely abusive to police your daughter’s hymen and any doctor who would participate in such an act needs to lose their license,” tweeted author Ijeoma Oluo.

Another commenter, Jennifer Gunter who is a gynecologist and bestselling writer wrote:  “hymen exams are medically not a thing,” and that the so-called tests “support a disgusting patriarchal trope.”

An intact hymen is not regarded as an effective way to test virginity because it can be easily broken without engaging in sexual activity.

Hosts of ‘Ladies Like Us’ Nazanin Mandi and Nadia Moham made fun of Harris’ comments and jokingly referred to Deyjah as a “prisoner.”

On Deyjah Harris’ Twitter account, she had “liked” comments that condemned the rapper’s behaviour with one describing it as “disgusting, possessive and controlling.”

39-year-old Harris is one of the forerunners of trap music, a type of hip-hop from the south of US with aggressive lyrics and 1980s-style drum machines.

Harris was in prison for seven months in 2009 when he tried to buy unregistered machine guns from dealers who were actually undercover agents.

After violating the terms of his probation on drug charges, he spent another 10 months in prison two years later.

Harris won three Grammy Awards with one of them being for the song “My Love”, a collaboration with Justin Timberlake. -/TISG

The Pakatan Harapan government made promises it will create a new economic corridor in Johor and it will be a long-term plan that goes beyond five or 10 years in development.

Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali said the government plans to create the new economic corridor in Johor and his ministry will deliberate on the matter before tabling the proposal for the project to the Economic Action Council chaired by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He made the comments ahead of the Tanjung Piai polls in Johor.

He said it will involve the creation of small townships in Johor linked to the revived Bandar Malaysia project.

“Small districts like Tanjung Piai must receive attention from the government for development,” he said.

“We want interior areas to be given attention and the amount (number) of towns that will be developed is still under consideration, where Tanjung Piai is not excluded. “The specifics (of towns to be developed) is still subject to discussions at the Federal level,” he added.

PH is facing a tough battle in Tanjung Piai and will face the Umno-PAS alliance which has an ethnic Chinese as a candidate in the by-election.

The Umno and the PAS is in full support of Barisan Nasional’s Dr Wee Jeck Seng who is favoured as a hot favourite in the polls.

In October, the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections or Bersih 2.0 slammed a Pakatan Harapan minister’s visit to the constituency ahead of the by-election, saying it is a continuation of the abuse of position as a Federal Government.

The previous Federal Government was also taken to task by Bersih and Pakatan (when it was in opposition) on such visits and promises made prior to elections. -/TISG

Singapore—The country’s newest political party, Progress Singapore Party (PSP), went on a walkabout to different parts of the country on Saturday, November 9. And because the party carried out its outreach via train, PSP called it a “Trainabout.”

Dr Tan Cheng Bock, the party’s head and one of its founders, said via his Facebook page that PSP’s rationale for the “Trainabout” is because “most Singaporeans use public transport heavily on a daily basis.”

He wrote, “We had many warm and wonderful encounters with Singaporeans from all walks of life. Thank you once again for your kind responses! It was an eventful afternoon indeed.”

A total of 22 teams from PSP participated in the “Trainabout,” according to a post on PSP’s Facebook page, which also said that part of the aim was “to introduce Progress Singapore Party to the nation,” the post also said that the party had been received warmly by Singaporeans.

PSP uploaded a video of the event, which can be viewed here.

Trainabout 911: 9 November 2019Team PSP went underground and overground, on various forms of public transport on our 2nd island-wide walkabout conducted yesterday. Singaporeans on the ground were not the only ones who greeted Dr Tan and PSP warmly, as netizens also enthusiastically expressed their support.

One commenter wrote, “The trishaw riders at Bugis were calling out Doc by his name, they were all for PSP. They requested for more flyers to help spread the message. Very encouraging indeed !”

Another netizen mentioned CECA (the India-Singapore Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement) in particular, appealing to Dr Tan to “Bring back jobs for ALL SINGAPOREANS !!!”

Anwar Ibrahim now tells people it’s tough to run a government

YouTube screebgrab/ Full Interview with Malaysia’s Anwar Ibrahim

Speaking on the Pakatan Harapan chances in the Tanjung Piai by-election in Johor, prime-minister-to-be reminded the voters how tough it is to run a government.

He said PH faces an uphill task in the by-election if it were to be judged after one year in power.

“We acknowledge there are challenges because the people are not measuring us based on the previous (government) if they did that we will win, but they are measuring us based on the one and a half years we have been in power.

“But I believe, God willing, if they understand how difficult it is for us to run the administration today, they will provide support,” he reportedly told reporters.

He said the people could understand how difficult it was for the government to run the current administration, “they would support its endeavour.”

However, he also said the PH government and its leaders should not expect the people to continue supporting the regime if it was unable to generate positive economic growth.

“Sometimes the information does not reach (the people), so it is our duty to convey it to the people so that they get the real picture of government leadership today,” he said.

Anwar said the Justice Party or PKR “should return its focus to the people, the problems of poverty, as well as helping the government generate economic growth.

“I want the party members not to forget, especially when we have formed the government, that we get preoccupied with positions, influence, power… we must remember that the party was formed to uphold the interests of the people,” he said.

He was speaking at one-day convention that was attended by 800 PKR members from across the state.

The PH is facing an uphill battle to get the voters on its side in the Tanjung Piai parliamentary by-election. It is being held after the death of Dr Md Farid Md Rafik, 42, of Bersatu.

The latter succumbed to heart complications at the Pontian Hospital on Sept 21. /TISG

Singapore Travel Tips For First-Timers

Following Jewel Changi’s official opening, Qatar Airways CEO said Singapore copied design of Doha airport expansion plans

The modern marvel that is Jewel Changi Airport mall has been in the global spotlight since it opened for business. Having welcomed over about 65 million visitors to date, it has already become an icon of design and technology. However, allegations have apparently been made by Qatar Airways’ CEO Akbar Al Baker that Singapore’s Jewel is merely a copycat of Doha airport’s expansion plans, slated to come to life in 2022.

Official opening of Jewel Changi Airport

October 18 was the official opening of Jewel Changi Airport, and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong spoke at the opening ceremony, noting that “Jewel has been almost 10 years in the making”.

“Jewel has become one of the instantly recognisable icons of Singapore. Every facet of it is brilliant,” said PM Lee. “Foreign leaders I have spoken to have gushed over it, and the New York Times recently featured Jewel in an article describing how visiting Singapore was ‘a trip to the future’. This is remarkable, because usually tourists want to leave the airport as soon as they can, but in Singapore, Changi Airport is a tourist attraction in itself, and Jewel has enhanced that reputation and appeal.”

PM Lee also noted that Jewel and Changi Airport were not only “an infrastructure story” but a representation of an idea—a symbol of “how Singapore … must dream boldly to create possibilities for ourselves”.

Expansion plans for Hamad International Airport

Four days after Jewel’s opening, Al Baker, who also serves as CEO of Hamad International Airport (HIA), introduced big expansion plans for the Doha airport.

A statement released on October 22 stated that the expanded Hamad International Airport will showcase a “10,000 sqm indoor tropical garden in a central concourse” and a 268 sqm water feature.

The statement specified that the indoor tropical garden will be housed under a “column-free, long-span 85m grid shell roof with performance glass”.

Who copied whom?

The description and photos are undeniably familiar—it’s almost like Jewel Changi. But according to travel news and reviews website Executive Traveller, Al Baker said the design for HIA was already in development six years ago and was stolen by people from another unnamed country on the team.

“Somebody copied our design, which was already on the table six years ago,” Al Baker was quoted as saying. “We had individuals from that country, I will not name it, who took that and did it [themselves],” he allegedly said.

He added that “the jewel of Hamad International” was different from the copy cat because “one is a shopping mall, and one is an international airport”.

Aviation website AirlineGeeks.com also shared the same comments by Al Baker. AirlineGeeks said that Al Baker explained that travellers arriving at HIA would not have to go through immigration to visit its indoor forest and waterfall.

“Without having to go to anybody’s Jewel, you can sustain yourself in the jewel of my country. So you don’t have to carry your suitcases, put trolleys, go to immigration and customs, to enjoy anybody’s jewel,” Al Baker was quoted as saying.

Changi Airport Group’s response

Changi Airport Group (CAG) responded to the allegations through an article published by The Straits Times (ST) on Monday (Nov 4).

CAG chief executive Lee Seow Hiang was quoted as saying that “the competitive process for a new integrated lifestyle complex was put in place as early as July 2012”.

In May 2013, Singapore developer CapitaLand was awarded the contract for the project, with a design by world-famous Safdie Architects, headed by award-winning Israeli-Canadian architect Moshe Safdie

“We value the originality and creativity of ideas as we innovate to elevate the Changi experience for all our visitors. We respect intellectual property rights and expect the same of all our partners,” Lee said to ST, also confirming that Safdie Architects told CAG that they have never worked in Qatar.

In fact, Lee said that Safdie Architects have been “pursuing the concept of gardens as a focal point for the public realm for many decades”. The firm has used natural rain water for internal waterfalls for other projects, like Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport and Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands.

“We are delighted that Jewel’s uniqueness and originality has been well-recognised by the international community and resulted in many wanting to emulate it,” he reportedly said. /TISG

Japanese singer and actor Akira, who is also Lin Chi-ling’s husband shared recently that he had important news to announce in September.

Following that, there was no news until now. It is said that the couple will be having an intimate wedding on 17 November at Lin Chi-ling’s father’s hometown in Tainan, Taiwan.

Straits Times quoted Apple Daily as saying that about 100 family and friends are invited to the afternoon ceremony followed by an evening party.

44-year-old Lin who is a Taiwanese model said via her representative that she is “really sorry that we aren’t able to invite everyone”.

Lin said that the decision to hold the wedding in Tainan was because she wants to share the same memories as her parents.

Photo: Screengrab from Instagram

Lin announced her marriage to 38-year-old Akira back in June, giving a surprise to everyone.

Her mother was unwell so that’s why the couple had to tie the knot in a hurry because she wants to see Lin marry while she is still alive.

Rumours are swirling that Lin visited a fertility clinic so guests are likely to check for signs of pregnancy on the wedding day on 17 November.

Lin’s father told the media that he asked her if she was expecting but she denied it.
She told her father there is no rush to start a family as she and Akira are busy.

“But the two of them are very healthy, so I am not worried,” said Lin’s father.

Previously when asked, Lin said she would like to have twins.

Lin has been seen often at functions and promotional events even though she said her career will slow down after marriage while Akira has been busy with work in Japan as well.

In China, Lin has many fans in the country and the wedding will be a good thing for Akira there.

Some Chinese netizens were not happy when they heard about the wedding because Akira is Japanese and the history of Japanese occupation in China back in World War II still linger.

Lin reportedly told her guests not to give the couple red packets but to give sensible gifts instead for the 17 November ceremony.

The guests are likely to show up with baby items. /TISG

Robert Pattinson wears classic blue and gray Batman suit in fan art

In a new fan art, Robert Pattinson dons a classic blue and gray costume.

In the past, throughout the history of Batman, the Caped Crusader has worn different versions of the iconic Batsuit.

Adam West’s version of Batman wears the blue and gray costume and other than that, few filmmakers have chosen that outfit.

An Instagram artist “spdrmnkyxxiii” found out that the gray and blue colour costume will be used for Robert Pattinson’s role in The Batman.

The artist then designed a concept art showing what Robert Pattinson may look like if he dons the gray and blue Batman costume for the upcoming film.

Check out the fan art below!

The storyline for The Batman is still a secret but it is said that the film will revolve around a younger Bruce Wayne, featuring Rogues’ Gallery of villains such as Catwoman, The Penguin and The Riddler.

The Dark Knight’s detective skills will be used to a greater extent compared to previous DC films and the Matt Reeves film will follow Batman during his formative years as Gotham City’s protector.

Batman would be the first of a new trilogy featuring the Twilight actor as Batman.

The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman and Paul Dano as Riddler. It will be directed by Matt Reeves from a script he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin.

Westworld star Jeffrey Wright may get the Commissioner James Gordon’s role.

The film will be released in theatres on June, 25 2021.

The casting of Robert Pattinson as Batman is an interesting one. With a resume that includes Twilight, Good Time, The Rover, Lost City of Z, High Life and Cosmopolis, Pattinson is proving to critics that he is not just a pretty face and he is fit for the role as the Dark Knight.
“Batman’s not a hero, though. He’s a complicated character. I don’t think I could ever play a real hero — there’s always got to be something a little bit wrong. I think it’s because one of my eyes is smaller than the other one,” said Robert Pattinson about his role as Batman.
