Charity Golf tournament kick-off SGX Cares Bull Charge 20th anniversary fundraising initiatives

0

SINGAPORE: The 20th anniversary of the SGX Cares Bull Charge annual charity drive teed off with a Charity Golf Tournament on Sept 7 at Sentosa Golf Club’s Serapong course. It saw the participation of about 150 golfers and supportive corporate donors. The Charity Golf, last held three years ago, successfully raised S$218,888 to support underprivileged children and families, persons with disabilities and the elderly.

The SGX Cares Bull Charge 2023 has set a goal of raising S$3 million this year through fundraising activities. The Charity Golf tournament marks the beginning of three main events organised under the SGX Cares Bull Charge charity initiative. The main objective is to unite the financial industry to uplift and empower the community. The next event is an 8th Charity Futsal competition scheduled for 30 Sep at Kick Off! @ Kovan. The final event will be the 20th Charity Run, which will take place on 27 Oct, with a new venue at the Marina Barrage.

By uniting the financial industry and engaging in these events, the SGX Cares Bull Charge aims to meet its fundraising target, which will benefit its beneficiaries and inspire individuals to actively contribute to the betterment of society.

“This year marks SGX Cares Bull Charge’s 20th anniversary. It is a significant achievement to have raised almost S$48 million to support our communities since 2004. This is only possible because of the strong commitment and contributions from our partners and sponsors,” said Pol de Win, SGX Cares Bull Charge Organising Chairperson and Head of Global Sales & Origination, SGX Group.

“We are very grateful to our sponsors who have journeyed with us through the years, including Bank of America who has been a Bull Charge supporter from day one. Thank you for embracing the ‘Better happens together’ spirit!”

Last year, the Charity Futsal was graced by Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong, and it garnered support from former national football players such as Fandi Ahmad, Malek Awab, Nazri Nasir, Lionel Lewis, Aleksandar Duric and Aide Iskandar. The event saw 31 teams, including all-women’s squads and youth players, battling it out for a noble cause.

The Charity Run was held virtually in 2020 and 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic before it resumed in a hybrid format, starting with a virtual run and then an in-person event last year at The Floating @ Marina Bay. This year, the Charity Run, which will be held at the Marina Barrage on a Friday, 27 Oct, will have the Chief Challenge Flag-0ff at 5.30pm and the Mass Run Flag-off 15 minutes later. The Festival Village will open at 6pm, and the prize presentation will be held at 745pm.

SGX Cares has announced that in partnership with the Community Chest, all monies raised from the various fundraising activities will be channelled to the adopted beneficiaries for 2023, which are AWWA Ltd., Autism Association (Singapore), Fei Yue Community Services, HCSA Community Services and Shared Services for Charities.

Anti-inflammatory drinks that you should be consuming

0

The effect of drinks on our health cannot be underestimated. Here’s a list of drinks that will help you improve chronic inflammation. Aside from eating right in terms of good fats, vegetables, fruit and fish, beverages can also help combat inflammation.

An important consideration for anti-inflammatory drinks is skipping ones high in sugar and saturated fat. Here are a few must-have drinks to include in your diet for a healthy lifestyle (excerpt from EatingWell)

Green Tea

Green tea contains epigallocatechin 3 gallate, or EGCG, which has anti-inflammatory benefits, according to a research paper published in 2023. It’s important, however, not to add sugar as that’s linked to even higher levels of inflammation.

Orange Juice

100% orange juice contains natural sugars along with Vitamin C and thiamin.

Orange juice is said to be linked to a reduction of interleukin 6, which is a marker of inflammation.

According to a study in the Journal of Food and Nutrition Research, adults who drank 750 millimetres or 3 cups of orange showed better anti-inflammatory and oxidative stress markers.

Pomegranate Juice

Pomegranate has polyphenols, which are proven to have anti-inflammatory benefits. Drinking pomegranate juice is also said to help with lowering blood pressure.

Green juice

Any combination of green juice, such as watercress, spinach or kale, is also great for inflammation. Watercress contains phenylethyl isothiocyanate or PEITC, which has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Beetroot juice

Beetroot is a natural source of betalains and plays a role in eliminating oxidative and nitrative stress, which provides anti-inflammatory benefits. Beet juice can often be purchased directly or made at home.

DEBATE: Should parents be responsible for their children’s financial security?

Financial security. This is a big question. Caleb Hammer, a prominent figure in the realm of personal finance content, has set off a captivating debate that digs deep into parents’ responsibilities when securing their financial future.

Hammer’s thought-provoking question sparks discussions about parents’ ethical duty towards their children’s financial well-being, prompting viewers to ponder the implications of inadequate retirement savings on future generations.

Hammer’s incendiary remark, “It is irresponsible of a parent to not be 100% set up for retirement if they have kids because then it forces them to be financially responsible for their parents,” reverberated across social media after being shared as a snippet from his YouTube series “Financial Audit.”

Parents financial security

The core of Hammer’s argument hinges on the notion that parents might not actively intend to become dependent on their children for financial aid in their later years. Yet, if they fail to accumulate sufficient savings for retirement, their children might be compelled, if not morally obligated, to shoulder the financial responsibilities that come with ageing parents.

The reverberations of this scenario have ignited a virtual firestorm of discussions, prompting viewers to examine the financial dynamics between generations and the potential repercussions of inadequate planning.

Inadequate planning and the future

“My mother-in-law is in this situation. Stopped working at 35 and now she’s 73 and essentially homeless living with us. We had to put our life and goals on hold,” a TikTok commenter pointed out.

This sentiment resonates with many who struggle to balance personal aspirations and familial responsibilities.

Although the sentiment conveyed by Hammer’s statement seemed to strike a chord with numerous TikTok users, there were also voices of empathy that recognized the unpredictability of life. One commenter noted, “Parents don’t want to live with their kids. The kids HAVE to become the adults.”

As society grapples with evolving family dynamics and economic uncertainties, individuals and families are compelled to explore avenues that ensure a stable financial future while maintaining the delicate balance between personal aspirations and familial responsibilities.

The question remains: Should parents be responsible for their children’s financial security?

100-year-old men in Costa Rica reveal their secret to long life

0

In Sardinia, Italy, it’s common for men to live to 100 years old, and the island has the highest number of male centenarians on the planet. This can be contrasted to the United States, where 100-year-old women outnumber 100-year-old men by 6 to 1.

Sardinians live in steep homes with stairwells, so they have to go up and down the stairs. Traditionally, these men worked as shepherds on the mountainside, which required a lot of walking on inclines.

Author and longevity expert Dan Buettner said, “They spend time with their animals, they’re up in the hills walking, they take naps and by happy hour, they’re usually back in their villages sharing a glass of wine with their friends.”

Netflix docuseries “Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones” premiered on Aug 30 and discussed how longevity is so prevalent in these areas. These men are also good at quitting their work when it’s time to stop. They end their workday on time and spend time with friends and family.

Buettner says that it’s not that they do not have any stress they do, but it’s just that they don’t have chronic stress. He says they work but are not stressed out at work.

Stress, longevity and disease

Research shows that chronic stress is one of the drivers of ageing-related diseases. Glucose spikes and inflammation in the body lead to issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity.

Neuro-ophthalmologist Dr Mithu Storoni says, “This sense of active coping, where you can resolve the problems you are given, is a very important part of mental health, cognitive longevity and stress resilience.

Costa Rica

Other areas known for longevity among its residents include Costa Rica’s Nicoya peninsula, also featured in the docuseries.

Buettner says in Nicoya, like other Blue Zones, people would never do a couple of hours of work when they could be enjoying their family, taking a siesta or interacting with their friends. They always slow down to make time for things that matter.

Effective Techniques To Make Value Investing Work For You

0

Valuechampion mailing list

You’re probably familiar with “buy low, sell high” to earn a profit from the stock market. In practice, this is notoriously difficult to do. You have to identify the right entry and exit points to reliably pull this strategy off.

Instead of trying to time the market (which is not advisable), a more successful strategy would be to buy a stock when it is underpriced – provided that the underlying company maintains strong long-term growth prospects.

This is known as value investing and is a popular technique that has helped many investors succeed, including Warren Buffett, Charlie Munger and Peter Lynch.

how does value investing work

How Value Investing Works

Founded by Benjamin Graham in the 1930s, the core principle behind value investing is to buy a company for less than its intrinsic value, which increases the chance of making a return while reducing risk to capital.

This is accomplished by analysing the company’s fundamentals to derive an intrinsic value independent of the stock price. When the gap between the former and the latter exceeds a certain point, an investor should buy the stock and hold it until the gap closes or overlaps.

Value Investing vs Growth Investing

While value investing seeks to invest in companies when stock prices are undervalued, stock price is less important in growth investing.

Instead, growth investors look to purchase stocks of companies they believe will achieve significant growth over a short period. This heightened demand from investors often pushes stock prices up and into overvalued territory.

Why Choose Value Investing?

Value investing has been proven to generate market-beating returns. Perhaps the most salient example of all time is Warren Buffet – Benjamin Graham’s most famous student – and the most successful investor of our modern times.

Between 1965 and 2021, Warren Buffett achieved a compounded annual gain of 20.1%; in that same period, the S&P 500 grew at an average of 10.5% per year.

More than its ability to outperform the market, value investing is worth considering as it focuses on companies with solid long-term prospects. The strategy also works well with portfolio diversification, as undervalued stocks may be found across the stock market’s breadth.

How to Value-Invest

As explained, value investing is all about investing in stocks with a value that exceeds the current stock price. Hence, it’s essential to understand the difference between value and price and how to determine a stock’s value.

Stock Value vs Stock Price

It’s important to understand that the market price of a stock doesn’t always equate to its value.

The stock price is simply the price investors are willing to pay to own one share of the stock. It influences investor demand, market trends, company news, and analyst reports.

Meanwhile, stock value is what the stock is worth, derived from fundamental factors such as earnings, market share, competitive landscape, etc.

To sum it up, remember this Warren Buffett quote – “Price is what you pay, value is what you get”.

Techniques to Calculate the Value of a Stock

Several metrics have been developed to calculate the intrinsic or fair value of a stock. Here are some of the more popular ones.

Price-to-earnings ratio (P/E)

P/E is derived by dividing the stock price by the company’s Earnings-per-Share (EPS) over the preceding 12 months. This ratio has many uses, including as an indicator of the stock’s value.

moomoo interface
Source: moomoo

If a stock’s P/E is low compared to its peers, it could signal the stock is currently trading below value. Conversely, a high P/E points to high levels of speculation – investors are willing to pay a higher price to own the stock now, as they believe it will go up in the future.

Note that P/E traditionally is a trailing measure, as it uses data from the immediate past 12 months. There is also Forward P/E, which is calculated using a 12-month forecast for EPS.

Trailing P/E and Forward P/E can differ significantly.

Price-to-earnings growth ratio (PEG)

PEG is an extension of P/E. It is derived by dividing the stock’s P/E by the company’s earnings growth rate, providing investors with a big-picture view of profitability growth compared to P/E.

Given the earnings growth rate, a low PEG can indicate that the stock is undervalued. Generally, stocks with PEG under one are considered underpriced, but this benchmark can vary depending on the sector and industry.

PEG ratio
:Source:

Price-to-book ratio (P/B)

The book value per share is the ratio of equity available to common shareholders divided by the number of outstanding shares.

Taking this figure and dividing it by share price gives us P/B, another popular measure of the value of a share.

A lower P/B may be interpreted as undervaluation, and there is more potential for a price movement to the upside. On the other hand, a higher P/B may point to overvaluation in a stock’s price.

Prices-to-sales ratio (P/S)

P/S is derived by dividing the stock price by the 12-month sales-per-share. This is an easy method to gauge a stock’s value, as company sales figures are usually commonly available.

To obtain sales-per-share, simply divide the total sales over 12 months by the number of outstanding shares.

Compared to industry benchmarks or sector peers, a low P/S could point to undervaluation in the stock and vice versa.

Other Factors to Consider, Besides Stock Price

Besides stock price, looking into other factors when investing is advisable. This is because, in value investing, you are not just buying undervalued stocks but taking a stake in companies poised to perform well in the future.

When value investing, it is also essential to control risk by ensuring a healthy level of portfolio diversification.

Fractional Shares

When starting, you may have limited capital to invest in multiple stocks. One alternative that you may consider is through investing in fractional shares. Fractional shares allow you to own less than one share of a company, enabling investments in multiple companies with a smaller amount, i.e. 10 different company shares with just US$50. This allows you to create an investment portfolio that is of a healthy level to weather uncertain market conditions.

moomoo fractional shares
Source: moomoo

This becomes easier as you study and understand more companies.

Here are some other factors to consider.

Financials

Financials are key metrics of a company’s health and long-term prospects. Your broker should provide quick snapshots of important financials, such as Earnings-per-Share (important for calculating P/E). An upward trend here is generally favoured.

moomoo app interface
Source: moomoo

Another useful metric is Free Cash Flow, which can help you estimate the company’s ability to continue growing despite tough times.

Also important is the Gross Margin, which can signal how well a company can command costs and pricing strategy.

Analysis

As an investor, finding out what others think is always useful. Brokerages commonly offer analysts stock ratings and price forecasts to subscribers to help them make informed investing decisions.

Professional analysis by stock experts can act as a quick check to support or discourage an investment decision, which may sometimes be highly personal.

If your conviction towards a stock is not borne out by analyst calls or price expectations, it may be worthwhile to do deeper research before going ahead with the trade.

News and events

Stock prices are not immune to macroeconomic factors. In fact, stocks can be highly sensitive to certain situations, ranging from internal events like a company recall or scandal to external developments such as policy changes or war.

Hence, choose a broker integrating pertinent and timely news reports in your trading platform. This can help you make better decisions and improve your success in value investing.

Electric Bicycles: Future Of Transportation?

0
electric-bicycles,-the-future-of-transportation

Electric bicycles seem to be gaining popularity in cities across the United States. The craze does not seem to be short-term as young and old take to the convenient and relatively cheap method of transportation.

Interestingly, the number of teenagers seeking driver’s licenses has also dropped. Cars are more expensive than ever, and wages aren’t what they used to be post-pandemic. Young people have also become more aware of the environment and keeping pollution at bay.

The electric bicycle has the same features as a pedal bike, but it is a lot easier to use as it has a motor-assisted pedal, giving people ease of travel, especially for uphill or steep climbs. The bicycles can go at 20 mph (32km/h) comfortably, safer than motorcycles and allowing you to see most of the city.

Bicycles workout option

The electric motor allows cyclists to tackle longer distances and explore new routes easily. The motor can be adjusted to suit individual preferences and range from minimal to significant. Some e-bikes have throttles, while others allow the rider to control the motor without pedalling.

The bicycles, therefore, offer a low-impact workout that can be adjusted as your fitness level improves and tailored to how much effort you want to put in on a specific day.

Other benefits of this wonderful machine include free parking, low entry cost, zero maintenance cost, and quite simply turning commutes into joy rides.

Price point-wise, a good e-bike can be purchased for less than $1,000.

City laws

As the popularity of e-bikes grows, cities around the country are looking for ways to regulate and manage the usage of this mode of transportation.

In California, a new bill is proposed to create a rider’s license to address road safety concerns.

Reduced traffic

According to research, a 10% shift from car drivers to bike riders has resulted in a 40% reduction in traffic congestion./TISG

King Charles’s health secrets to becoming the oldest living king in British monarchy

0
prince-harry-likely-to-be-sitting-’10-rows-back’-at-king-charles’-coronation

King Charles is currently the oldest person to become King in British history. In fact, almost everyone in the British monarchy has a history of long lives. Queen Elizabeth II lived to be 96, while Prince Philip lived up to 99. And Queen Mother overtook everyone by living up to 101.

King Charles follows a regimented routine and sensible eating plan to maintain good health. He is fond of plant-based food and does simple exercises to stay healthy.

King Charles: The diet

According to the Independent UK, Charles skips at least one meal daily. According to royal correspondent Gordon Rayner, Charles views lunch as a “luxury that gets in the way of his work” and eats a “late breakfast” instead.

For breakfast, the King’s favourite meal is cheesy baked eggs. He is also said to like Darjeeling tea with milk and honey.

One report also states that the King prefers a plant-based diet to help fight climate change.

In a BBC radio station interview in October 2021, he told the Associated Press, “I haven’t eaten meat or fish on two days a week, and I don’t eat dairy products on one day a week. If more did that, you would reduce a lot of the pressure.”

Organic food

In addition, the King is also fond of organic food. According to former royal chefs Darren McGrady and Carolyn Robb, the King greatly emphasises organic food. Robb said the monarch’s farm was one of the first organically certified in the UK.

McGrady also described the King as a foodie and said he liked eating different dishes throughout the week, stating that he often ate fruit for breakfast and enjoyed savoury food over sweets.

Exercise

In an interview, Queen Camilla once told the BBC that King Charles was “probably the fittest man of his age I know”.

“He’ll walk and walk. He’s like a mountain goat. He leaves everybody miles behind.”

In addition to his long walks, Charles is also fond of the 5BX plan, which is the Royal Canadian Air Force’s five basic exercises.

The regimen only takes 11 minutes, is designed for pilots, and allows them to exercise even without access to a gym, which is practical for King Charles, considering his busy schedule.

The workout incorporates body-weight exercises such as push-ups and stretching. Prince Philip, Prince William and Prince Harry are also fond of this routine.

What secrets do men hide from their wives?

0
what-secrets-do-men-hide-from-their-wives?

Behind the veil of any relationship lies a realm of hidden thoughts and emotions, secrets that men may be hesitant to share with their wives.

While transparency is key to a healthy marriage, there are certain aspects of life that men sometimes choose to keep guarded, not out of deceit but due to an array of complex reasons.

Here are intriguing secrets men often hide from their wives.

More Secrets

Vulnerabilities – Societal expectations have often conditioned them to conceal their vulnerabilities. Many men suppress their insecurities, fears, and anxieties, fearing being perceived as weak or incapable.

Financial Worries – They might struggle with concerns about job security, debt, or investments, striving to shield their families and undue stress on their wives. Open communication about financial matters can alleviate anxiety and foster a sense of unity when facing economic challenges together.

Past Relationships – Men’s past relationships, romantic entanglements, and regrets might be hidden away due to fear of causing jealousy, insecurity, or unnecessary drama. However, sharing these stories can foster empathy and deepen the understanding of each other’s personal growth journeys.

Fantasies and Desires – These dreams can encompass various areas, from career aspirations to intimate fantasies. The hesitation to share them with wives might arise from the fear of judgment or misunderstanding.

Health Concerns – Whether it’s mental health struggles, physical ailments, or even concerns about their appearance, reluctance to discuss these matters can stem from societal expectations of invulnerability. Thus, it is kept as one of the secrets.

Intimacy – Intimacy isn’t just about physical connection—it’s also about emotional closeness. Some men may hide their fear of intimacy due to past traumas, insecurities, or rejection. Cultivating a space where both partners can express their emotional needs and concerns without judgment can help dissolve these barriers and create a stronger emotional bond.

Personal Space from Wives

This is the biggest secret. Men sometimes conceal this need, fearing that their desire for alone time might be misinterpreted as a lack of interest in their wives. Open conversations about personal boundaries can pave the way for a healthier balance between togetherness and individuality.

The key to unveiling these secrets is fostering open communication, understanding, and empathy. As couples embrace vulnerability, they’ll find these once-hidden secrets can be the stepping stones toward a more authentic and deeply connected partnership.
