Things that may be poisoning your relationship without you knowing it

Relationship

There are many things we can do to make relationships better but conversely the opposite is also true and we may be doing things that are in fact making the relationship worse without us realising it.

Author of Should I Stay or Should I Go? Surviving a Relationship With a Narcissist, Dr. Ramani Durvasula says that relationships typically don’t end over one big thing, but rather lots of little things that slowly bleed it to death.

Since little things don’t seem like a big deal it’s easy to let them go until they pile up and become something huge that feels impossible to change.

“In some ways, the bad habits weaken the foundation of a relationship, leave people feeling more vulnerable, less invested, more full of self-doubt and more likely to surrender or less able to collaborate when under stress,” she says.

Here are some things that you can avoid doing or make a mental note to do less of:

  1. Being on the phone all the time

Even if it’s a work thing splitting your time between work and your partner all the time can make them feel like neglected.

Marriage counselor and family therapist David Klow says, “It can help to either be all present with your partner or let them know that you can talk once you are off your phone.”

You can say something like ‘I have to take this call but after that you will have my full attention.’

  1. Jokes in public at your partners expense

It’s easy sometimes to laugh at each other’s foibles in private but doing it in public is a huge no-no even if it’s couched as a joke. Do not joke about the new haircut, the new diet or anything that might be considered hurtful by your partner in public or among friends.

  1. Don’t keep score even if you don’t say it out loud

Do not keep track of the rights and wrongs and how many times your partner has ticked you off. Let it go because it’s just going to fast track you to misery.

“Counting the rights and wrongs that each person does can cause pettiness and resentment,” says Klow. Instead his advice is to take a long term view and see that over time, the give and take may balance itself out.

  1. You’re passive-aggressive

Passive aggressive behaviour in a relationship reflects indirect communication and a fair amount of unhappiness that challenges your self-esteem and insecurity. Durvasula classifies it as a ‘relationship killer’.

  1. Do not start arguments over text messages

Text messages cannot be interpreted well as it does not reflect any emotion and can easily be misconstrued. Stay well away from stating your feelings over text when you can have face to face contact and a real conversation.

Signs your marriage might be at breaking point

marriage

Marriages don’t just end overnight there are a series of events that makes the relationship erode over time. Relationship experts talk about some of the signs to watch out for:

  1. An eerily quite household

No laughter, no chatter and just quietness in general is not a good sign at all. Conversations are cursory and there is no deep conversation other than things like who is going to take out the garbage or do some other basic chores.

  1. Most of the communication is sarcastic or results in arguments

Author of Love that Works: A Guide to Enduring Intimacy, loveologist and sex educator, Wendy Strgar says, “You’re living in a land mine where the heart connection that keeps relationships safe has eroded and no one is expressing themselves except through indirect, passive-aggressive comments.”

  1. You think about other people and not just a little bit

If you spend a lot of time thinking about other people it’s quite probable that your emotional needs are not being met. Marriage counselor and relationship coach Samantha Burns says, “You might think you’re just looking but this is a breach of trust and security in your relationship, even if you don’t message or go out with anyone. In an at-risk marriage you look outside of the relationship to feel attractive, desired or to feel like you matter.”

  1. You hardly touch each other

Happy couples tend to hold hands more, lean against each other and less of this is not a good sign at all. Strgar says that generally when a marriage has no genuine relationship to hold to, the idea of sex is also unappealing. “If either of you is saying no to sex perpetually, you need to look deeper at what is really going on,” says Strgar.

  1. You would rather spend time with your friends than your significant other

If you rather go out with your friends and have stopped enjoying leisure time with your partner that’s not a good thing either. The same applies if your primary mode of communication is via text, it signals drifting.

Burns say having a ‘we’ mindset instead of a ‘me’ mindset is important in a relationship. So if any of the above is already happening, take action or it might just be too late.

SG man drives to China and back: 11,000km road trip in 27 days

SINGAPORE: If you’re looking for an unusual, off-the-beaten-path trip that will bring joy, Mr Able Wang may have the answer for you. His Facebook post on the MY SG Road Trip – Your Malaysia Road Trip Guide page about his 11,000-kilometer drive to China and back has gotten a lot of attention and will likely inspire others to travel the road he took.

On Oct 31, Mr Wang wrote that he was back in Singapore after a 27-day road trip which was full of extremes—in altitude, temperature and weather conditions, highways and smaller streets, and roads in various states from “horrible” to “splendid.” The experience was described as: “There were frustrations and happiness. Ultimately, it was joy and more joy.”

What made Mr Wang’s post more valuable is that he also provided information about the requirements for driving to China when one brings his or her own car. What’s needed are a provisional Chinese driving licence, provisional vehicle number, a tour guide who can manage foreigners from the day of entry until departure, and a separate Tibetan local guide if you are going to Tibet, he wrote.

However, he warned that the provisional Chinese driving licence and vehicle number need to be prepared in advance, and an application for the vehicle number indicating one’s fixed itinerary, date of entry, and departure must be handed in.

Mr Wang also explained the two ways to drive to China. One is through road trip packages with a fixed itinerary, departure time and price from adventure companies from China, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. This is the easier way, as the companies make all the arrangements for necessary documents. He noted that these companies usually charge per person plus car application fees.

Photo: FB/ablezwang/yading roadtrip

The other way is to “gather a group of friends and contact the specialised tour companies in China to arrange a road trip for you. Unless you are an experienced planner and knows China very well, you should leave it to the tour agent to plan the trip for you.” For this, one’s driving license, passport, log card, and road tax must be sent to the tour company.

Photo: FB/ablezwang/Look closely at the roads at the bottom of the mountain. I drove along that entire road

Mr Wong wrote that he did it DIY style for his itinerary for Thailand when he drove from Singapore to Chiang Khong and then back to Singapore. He’s done a road trip to Thailand seven times in all. For the trip to China from Thailand, he joined a Thai adventure group and drove as part of a convoy from Laos to China and back to Chiang Khong. However, he added that he does not “endorse and recommend because the convoy leader and guide only speak in Thai language. If you have experienced travelling in a convoy, you will know the value of the instructions from the convoy leader through the walkie talkie. Bear in mind our cars are right hand drive and that makes overtaking on left hand drive roads difficult for the inexperienced drivers without the assistance from the convoy leader.”

However, he underlined that China is worth driving to and urged those interested to do it while in good health. He also encouraged them to learn to use Amap (高得) or Baidu Map in China since Google Maps are not updated in China.

Photo: FB/ablezwang/Yading

“If you love and enjoy driving, just do it,” he added before going on to dispel some false information. “There is no need to pass any tests to apply for the provisional driving licence. The Chinese agent will do the conversion for you assuming you already have a driving licence from your country. There is no requirement for ‘right connections; and special permits for each province. The exception is Tibet where the agent will apply (for a) permit for your vehicle and you to enter the special zone. Any vehicles can enter China, not just diplomatic vehicles. Any type of vehicles can go to China, not only SUV and trucks. There is no requirement to report your income.”

Enhanced Connectivity

JTHBI improves connectivity by linking to Jurong East MRT station and Jurong East Bus Interchange through covered linkways and a pedestrian overhead bridge equipped with lifts. This development ensures commuters can access all three transportation hubs via fully-sheltered routes, enhancing their travel experience.

New Bus Service and Route Adjustments

A new bus service named Service 870 will serve residents in Tengah new town, connecting them to vital amenities in Jurong East Town Centre. Service 870 will traverse Jurong East Central, Bukit Batok West Avenues 3 and 6, making commuting more convenient for residents.

Service 78, currently operating with first boarding and last alighting points along Jurong Gateway Road, will extend its route to operate out of JTHBI. Simultaneously, Service 160 will be adjusted to travel along Jurong Gateway Road and Venture Drive, terminating at JTHBI, eliminating stops at Jurong East Bus Interchange. These route adjustments, combined with the introduction of Service 870, will be effective on Nov 26, 2023.

Information regarding these changes will be available at relevant bus stops, bus interchanges, and on the Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) website. Commuters may also seek assistance from staff employed by the respective bus operators.

LTA requests commuters’ understanding during the transition period as the operators adapt to the new bus interchange’s operations. LTA and the bus operators assure commuters that they will closely monitor the situation and make any necessary adjustments to ensure a seamless and comfortable journey for all.

URA reveals 6000 homes to be built on Pearl’s Hill, the first in more than 40 years

SINGAPORE: On Friday, Nov 3, under the draft master plan 2025, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) revealed plans for inclusive and lively neighbourhoods in central SG, addressing the diverse aspirations and lifestyle needs of Singaporeans.

The initiative aims to meet the rising demand for housing while building stronger communities. The plans included 6000 homes to be built on Pearl’s Hill and Marina South and conceptual plans for Bukit Timah Turf City, the former Keppel golf course site, and Mount Pleasant.

6000 homes to be built on Pearl’s Hill

One of the standout features of the URA’s plan is the revitalization of Pearl’s Hill, marking the first introduction of new public housing to Pearl’s Hill in over 40 years.

Located in the Central Region, Pearl’s Hill will be transformed into an inclusive and community-centric neighbourhood offering a diverse mix of public and private housing. This development includes BTO flats, rental flats, condominiums, and serviced apartments, catering to an array of needs and lifestyle preferences of Singaporeans.

In a decade, approximately 6,000 new homes will be gradually developed on the hillside. The neighbourhood will seamlessly integrate with Outram Park MRT station, making daily commuting convenient for residents.

In addition, sustainable and active living will be promoted by providing public plazas and recreational spaces, creating opportunities for residents to get to know their neighbours.

The URA’s plan for Pearl’s Hill also ensures the preservation of Pearl’s Hill City Park, respecting its unique natural beauty and historical significance. By offering amenities that blend with the park’s environment, residents will enjoy the benefits of living in a lush, green space within the city.

More Housing Options in the Central Region

Apart from Pearl’s Hill, the URA actively explores more housing opportunities across various central locations, including Bukit Timah Turf City, Mount Pleasant, and the former Keppel golf course site.

Bukit Timah Turf City

Located near two MRT stations, the URA is studying the feasibility of offering a variety of housing choices, both public and private, to cater to different aspirations, preferences, and budgets. The plan places a strong emphasis on respecting the area’s heritage as a former racecourse while integrating ecological assets and green spaces for the community.

While detailed plans are still in the works, the URA’s commitment to sustainability, heritage preservation, and diverse housing options is evident in its approach to development. These new neighbourhoods will not only add housing supply but also provide residents with a vibrant and welcoming living environment.

Mr Lim Eng Hwee, CEO of URA, said, “We are committed to fulfilling the goal in the Long-Term Plan of making housing more inclusive and accessible for generations of Singaporeans. In the current review of the Master Plan, we will therefore plan for a greater variety of housing options across different parts of the island and prioritise development on brownfield sites such as Pearl’s Hill. While doing so, we will take care of the ecological and heritage significance of these areas by developing sensitively and sustainably. We welcome ideas from Singaporeans on the plans as we continue this journey to shape a liveable, inclusive and endearing home for all.”

The new neighbourhood plans will be displayed at The URA Centre until Feb 2, 2024, when the public can visit to share their feedback and sign up for guided tours with URA volunteers at go.gov.sg/mcmh.

SG’s elderly: 1/5 population by 2026; presents lucrative business opportunities in “longevity economy”

SINGAPORE: With more and more seniors and a declining birth rate, Singapore is set to transition into a super-ageing society within the next three years, a condition defined by the World Health Organization when more than 20% of the population is 65 or above. Currently, Singapore is already considered an ageing society, with 19.1% of its population falling into this age group.

The World Health Organization stipulates that when the proportion of a population aged 65 and above exceeds 14%, it qualifies as an ageing society. In Singapore’s case, this proportion is currently at 19.1%, and it is projected to rise to 25% by 2030, meaning one in every four people will be 65 years or older.

As people live longer, the birthrate has been steadily decreasing year by year. While this trend is not unique to Singapore and affects many countries and regions globally, the demographic shifts here have particular implications given Singapore’s small size.

While Singapore boasts one of the longest life expectancies in the ASEAN region, with an average of about 83 years, concerns have been raised about the quality of life for its ageing population. Despite living longer, Singaporeans are experiencing an increase in disability-adjusted life years due to illness, affecting their overall quality of life.

The average number of years of illness per person in Singapore is approximately 9.22 years, highlighting the challenges that elderly individuals and their caregivers face.

Associate Professor Kalyani from the Department of Gerontology at Singapore University of Social Sciences told Channel 8 news: “You can imagine that caregivers also face a lot of difficulties when caring for their elderly relatives, especially when the elderly are immobilized.”

In addressing these issues, experts stress the importance of a multifaceted approach. They suggest that improving the health of the elderly is crucial, but it’s equally important to include the perspectives of young people and caregivers when formulating policies covering ageing. Additionally, finding ways to enable the elderly to contribute to their communities and society is essential.

Social resources, such as volunteering opportunities and involvement in sustainability and climate change initiatives, can help enhance the quality of life for the elderly. This shift in perspective from viewing the elderly as burdens to recognizing them as valuable resources contributes to improved mental health and dignity in their senior years.

Meanwhile, as Singapore’s median population age continues to rise, it presents opportunities for businesses catering to the elderly. Healthcare startups utilizing artificial intelligence for elderly patient care and platforms curating lifestyle goods for seniors are flourishing.

According to Ageing Asia’s Silver Economy Index 2020, Singapore possesses the largest market potential for an ageing population among 15 Asia-Pacific countries.

The silver economy in Singapore is projected to reach a staggering $72.4 billion in value by 2025, offering lucrative opportunities for businesses in this sector. Singapore’s baby boomer generation, better educated and financially secure, is driving spending growth among the elderly population. This shift in attitude toward spending among seniors is influencing the growing demand in what’s termed the “longevity economy.”

As Singapore evolves into a super-ageing society, it faces numerous challenges but also opportunities for improvement in the quality of life for its ageing population and growth in the silver economy, promising a dynamic future for the city-state and its seniors.

4-room resale flat sells for a million dollars in record deal

SINGAPORE: A four-room Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat located at Ang Mo Kio Street 51 has been resold for a whopping $1 million. This marks the first time a four-bedroom HDB unit in Ang Mo Kio has reached a million-dollar price point.

The transaction was reported to have taken place last month, as per information available on the HDB website.

According to real estate portal 99.co, the flat is situated between the 31st to 33rd floors of Block 591A, Ang Mo Kio Street 51, and boasts an area of 93 square meters. This HDB unit is under a 99-year lease and is less than six years old, making it a relatively new property that was likely sold after the first owner completed their minimum occupancy period.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first high-value transaction in the building, as earlier this year, in January, another four-bedroom unit in the same HDB complex was resold for approximately $960,000.

Presently, 20 units are available for sale within the same block, with the lowest asking price starting at $870,000, showcasing a rising trend in property values in the area.

According to data released by 99.co and SRX for HDB resale transactions in September, the median resale price for a four-room HDB flat in Ang Mo Kio stands at $520,000. Furthermore, the median resale price for all housing types in the area hovers around $500,000.

A notable observation from the data is the difference in resale prices based on the age of the HDB flats. A four-room HDB flat in Ang Mo Kio that is less than 20 years old commands a median resale price of $945,000, while those over 20 years old have a lower median resale price of $514,000.

Victoria’s Secret dumping wokeness after their sales took massive hit

Victoria's Secret

For certain brands that rely on the attractiveness of their models, they should maintain what makes them the most money. Brands like Victoria’s Secret who plan on being woke are now suffering from declining sales. Lingerie brands are made for a certain type of allure, not to propagate political agendas from the woke left.

Furthermore, it is clear that the conservative dollar bills are worth a lot more than the woke liberals. Everytime a company goes woke, they go broke as conservatives boycott these respective brands.

According to Fox Business, lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret is reportedly shifting away from its recent feminist and woke rebrand, which aimed to combat “White supremacy culture practices” in math instruction. The company is returning to its previous “hyper-sexualized” image in an attempt to boost declining revenue.

Furthermore, efforts to promote inclusivity by featuring LGBTQ and transgender spokesmodels, along with scrapping the famous “Angels,” received favourable reviews but failed to increase sales. Victoria’s Secret’s projected 2023 revenue of $6.2 billion is lower than in previous years, showing the financial struggles stemming from their body-positive approach. The company now seeks to blend inclusivity with its traditional sexiness.

Victoria’s Secret dumping wokeness

There are several users stating that being plus size is generally not sexy to most people. A brand like Victoria’s Secret previously relied heavily on their “angels” to have a certain skinny body type. In addition to this, many agree that woke companies immediately go broke after abandoning their main clientele.

Conservatives are calling out the mainstream media trying to gaslight everyone into agreeing that woke companies are successful. However, the same media organisations published contrary statements to their wokeness. Bud Light has taken a heavy loss since their collaboration with Dylan Mulvaney.

However, some conservatives are stating the irony of these woke companies that claim it’s not about money. Once their sales tank, they immediately backtrack saying that their sales are low and they’re abandoning this entire ideology. Unfortunately, for the woke crowd, they would only be satisfied if the company fails entirely.

Faithful Forever: What drives men away from infidelity?

0

At an age where infidelity often makes headlines and relationships seem fleeting, the idea of staying faithful forever appears elusive. However, there are men who stand firm in their commitment to a lifelong bond with their partners.

Being faithful forever

What drives these men to stay faithful forever?

Economics – Cheating comes at a high cost – emotionally, financially, and socially. The guilt, secrecy, and potential fallout from infidelity can be emotionally draining. Moreover, affairs can lead to divorce, alimony, and legal complications, which can be financially crippling. Many men recognize that the price of cheating is simply not worth it.

Upbringing – The values instilled in some men from a young age, including respect, loyalty, and commitment, shape their understanding of what it means to be in a loving and long-lasting relationship. These men honor the teachings of their parents and guardians and carry these principles into their own relationships.

Sticking-to-one – Some men simply have no desire to be with anyone other than their partner. Their love, affection, and emotional connection are so profound that they cannot imagine being in the arms of another.

Consequence not worth the trouble – The potential consequences of infidelity can be devastating. From shattered trust to broken families, the fallout is often a painful and life-altering experience.

Overwhelming anxiety – Anxiety and stress accompany infidelity. Keeping secrets, sneaking around, and fearing discovery create immense anxiety that can erode one’s well-being and attractiveness. Men who value a peaceful and harmonious relationship understand that anxiety is far from attractive.

Immunity to remorse – Men who stay faithful forever acknowledge that infidelity can desensitize a person to feelings of remorse. They realize that repeatedly betraying their partner can lead to a sense of callousness and emotional detachment.

Deeply personal

The decision to stay faithful forever is deeply personal and multifaceted. It is a combination of upbringing, emotional connection, values, and the awareness of the profound consequences of infidelity. These men choose to embrace the beauty of a loving, faithful relationship and make a conscious effort to preserve it. Their loyalty is a testament to their commitment, understanding of infidelity’s cost, and unwavering love for their partners.

Royal Rift: King Charles III calls for civility amidst royal family split

slave trade, coronation, charles, Royal Rift

In a regal and thought-provoking address, King Charles III, flanked by Queen Camilla, graced the City of London with his presence, where he delivered a poignant speech that delved into the current royal rift and the pressing issues of our times. His Majesty seized the moment to convey a powerful message of unity and cooperation, imploring his subjects to rise above the din of discord.

Calls for unity and cooperation

“The instinct to cooperate wherever and whenever possible is deep within us. Even in the most fractious times – when disagreements are polished, paraded, and asserted – there is in our land a kind of muscle memory that does not have to be like this,” King Charles proclaimed.

His words carried a profound weight, as he called for an end to the cacophony of shouting matches, urging for constructive and uplifting dialogues in our increasingly complex and interconnected society. “That the temptation to turn ourselves into a shouting or recriminatory society must be resisted, or at least heavily mitigated whenever possible, especially in the digital sphere, where civilized debate too often gives way to rancor and acrimony,” he emphasized.

King Charles went further, seeking a revival of decency and a better understanding among his subjects. “These instincts come together in perhaps the deepest of all our reservoirs—the one that irrigates our crucial sense of responsibility, both individual and collective—that enables us to fulfill our duties as good citizens who understand, without having to write them down or formalize them, the decencies on which our institutions and our constitution depend, as well as our relationships, one to another.”

Subtle message to end royal rift

Royal commentator Angela Levin hinted at the unspoken messages behind the King’s eloquent words. She postulated that King Charles may have been addressing the ongoing tensions with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

In her view, King Charles’s message serves as a subtle warning to Prince Harry, suggesting that demands for apologies should not overshadow the broader call for civility and mutual respect.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex now face a challenging path if they seek reconciliation with the Royal Family. Will the Royal rift end?
