The Police said that they have arrested a 60-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a series of “Grab / Uber Promotional Packages” scams.
Between 22 and 23 Feb, Police received several reports from victims who were introduced to cheap “Grab / Uber Promotional Packages” through their friends who had come across these promotions by word of mouth.
The victims were then asked to contact the seller via Whatsapp, and were instructed to transfer money to bank accounts to purchase the packages. However, the victims were not able to redeem the rides after making payments. The seller also became uncontactable subsequently.
Police said that upon receipt of the report, officers from Bedok Division conducted extensive investigations to establish the identity of the suspect and arrested him on 24 March and that investigations are ongoing.
Anyone found guilty with the offence of cheating may be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend up to 10 years, and shall also be liable to a fine.
The Police also advised members of the public to purchase rides only from official sources and to always exercise caution when purchasing items at prices that sound too good to be true.
