Lin Youyi, 42, Singaporean television host, current affairs presenter and actress, recently moved out of her 1,000 sq ft apartment to a one-room Tanjong Pagar condo instead. Due to the nature of her job as a current affairs presenter and travel host, Lin Youyi has seen with her own eyes the disastrous effects of climate change, which inspired her to reflect and change her lifestyle by cutting out excesses.

In an interview with 8days.sg, the television host shared that travelling has taught her so much. “When I was living with my parents, I took everything for granted. I had all the space I wanted, bought everything I wanted and just dumped it in the house” she said. When she started doing her travelogue, she realized that she can survive with just one suitcase. “We don’t really need so many things in life,” the 42-year-old added.

In the last few years, Lin Youyi has been making sustainable decisions to lead a more meaningful lifestyle – buying less and living in a smaller home. As a fan of Marie Kondo, she explained that she is not living a minimalist life, but rather wants to “spend time with the things that matter”.

Back in 2019, she bought a 1,000 sq ft apartment but later decided not to move into it. She then opted to look for a much smaller place to rent but the pandemic struck while she was searching for a space – which made her stay with her parents for a while. Lin Youyi resumed looking for a place this year and finally found a one-bedroom condo in Tanjong Pagar.

The 500 sq ft unit is in the heart of Central Business District (BCD), which benefits Youyi as she will be closer to her clients, especially because she does corporate training as well. Aside from the convenience, she also loves the energy of the neighbourhood.

“I need a place that is good enough for just myself and an environment that inspires me,” she expressed. For Lin Youyi, her new home gives her so much joy.
