A customer appeared to feel that she did not get her money’s worth when she recently bought a bowl of prawn noodle soup, so she took the matter to social media.

“$8.30 for this 1 teeny weeny prawn and uncooked bee hoon,” wrote Ms Charmaine Cheng on the COMPLAINT SINGAPORE Facebook page on Tuesday (Nov 1).

She added that she had bought the prawn noodle soup at the Waterway Point branch of the popular eatery Toast Box.

She included a photo of the soup in her post, where only one piece of prawn can be seen.

In photos of the Toast Box dish, there are at least two prawns, and a 2022 online price list says that it costs $7.80.

TISG has reached out to Toast Box to comment on the post.

Commenters on Ms Cheng’s post appeared equally shocked at its high price.

One commenter, however, brought up food guru and Makansutra founder KF Seetoh.

“Makansutras KF Seetoh will say stop complaining and expecting cheap meals.

Count your blessings you’re not paying 20$ like the new yorkers are at his overpriced ripoff hawker place in the US,” they wrote.

Indeed, after netizens found the prices of dishes sold at Urban Hawker in New York very high in comparison to hawker food in Singapore, Mr Seetoh had said that the hawker food business in Singapore is not sustainable and that Urban Hawker’s $23 chicken rice should not be the news, the low price of $4 should be newsworthy instead.

However, throughout 2022, many netizens have complained about higher food and beverage prices, including eggs, economy rice, bee hoon, and even lemon tea. /TISG
