Singapore—Netizens were full of praise for two British tourists who displayed heroism, compassion, and courage as they helped rescue a woman in the lake at Bukit Batok Town Park, which is also known as Little Guilin or Xiao Guilin.

On September 24, Tuesday, the couple, Simon and Lesley Brewin, had seen a small stool leaning against a side barrier near Little Guilin and immediately felt that something must have gone wrong.

When they looked over the barrier and into the lake, they saw a woman, whom the SCDF later described as “elderly,” holding onto a branch, with her body almost completely in the water.

Mrs Brewin told Channel NewsAsia (CNA) that only the woman’s mouth and nose remained above the lake’s surface when they saw her clinging to the branch.

Mr Brewin attempted to pull the woman out of the water, while Mrs Brewin ran to get aid from the people passing by. Mr Brewin told CNA, “I didn’t dare enter the water as I didn’t know how deep it was.”

After alerting passers-by to the situation so they could get assistance, Mrs Brewin then jumped into the water and gave the woman mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while help was on its way.

According to Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), at 11:50 a phone call asking for help came in from Bukit Batok Town Park. The SCDF said, “An elderly woman was rescued by SCDF using a life buoy and a ladder.”

After they pulled her out of the water, an SCDF ambulance took the woman to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.

Mr and Mrs Brewin, who are a 66-year-old retiree and a 65-year-old photographer respectively, are currently on a visit to Singapore to see their children.

Netizens were full of praise for the couple, whom they called “angels” who were “at the right place at the right time.

One netizen even said that Mrs Brewin deserved to be given Permanent Resident status.

Some netizens even said that they would not mind “crowdfunding their holiday.”
