Joe Biden

On Monday, the Biden team announced a significant $50 million advertising campaign targeting battleground state voters, focusing sharply on Trump’s recent felony conviction from his hush-money trial.

The centerpiece of this campaign is a 30-second ad juxtaposing images of a smiling Biden engaging with voters against shots of a grim-faced Trump in court.

The ad’s narrator draws a stark contrast: “This election is between a convicted criminal who’s only out for himself and a president who’s fighting for your family.”

Unsurprisingly, the Trump campaign fired back. Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt criticized the ad on social media, reiterating unfounded claims that Trump’s legal woes are politically motivated.

“This new ad once again proves the sham trial was always meant to be election interference, but Americans see through it,” Leavitt posted on X.

The Biden campaign has consistently leveraged Trump’s conviction, the first for any former president, to underscore his unsuitability for the presidency. This strategy has included billboards near Trump events labelling him a “convicted felon” and Biden himself using the term at a recent Connecticut fundraiser.

Michael Tyler, Biden’s communications director, underscored this message in a statement on Monday: “Trump approaches the first debate as a convicted felon who continues to prove that he will do anything and harm anyone if it means more power and vengeance for Donald Trump.”

Conviction sways undecided voters

Polls indicate that Trump’s conviction may be swaying undecided voters. A recent Politico Magazine/Ipsos poll revealed that 32% of registered independents are less likely to support Trump following his conviction, compared to 12% who are more likely to back him. Meanwhile, 40% stated it had no impact on their decision.

With the debate stage set, Biden’s campaign is betting that highlighting Trump’s criminal record will resonate with voters in these critical final weeks.
