Canada has arrested the CFO of China’s Huawei Technologies, who now faces extradition to the United States on suspicion she violated US trade sanctions against Iran.
Meng Wanzhou, who is also the deputy chair of Huawei’s board and the daughter of company founder Ren Zhengfei, was arrested on Saturday in Vancouver at the request of American law enforcement authorities.
“She is sought for extradition by the United States, and a bail hearing has been set for Friday,” Justice Department spokesman Ian McLeod said in a statement to The Globe and Mail on Wednesday. “As there is a publication ban in effect, we cannot provide any further detail at this time. The ban was sought by Ms. Meng.”

Uber is plotting the return of its self-driving cars, but the company known for its hard-charging style is taking a much more conservative approach as it tries to recover from a fatal accident that upended its autonomous vehicle program.
After it receives approval from the state of Pennsylvania, Uber plans to begin driving “a handful” of cars on a mile loop between two company offices in Pittsburgh, where Uber first debuted its autonomous vehicles in 2016, company spokeswoman Sarah Abboud said. That would mark Uber’s first self-driving car tests on public streets since it halted its operations nearly nine months ago in the wake of a crash in Arizona that killed a pedestrian.

Google’s self-driving car spinoff is finally ready to try to profit from its nearly decade-old technology.
Waymo is introducing a small-scale ride-hailing service in the Phoenix area that will include a human behind the wheel in case the robotic vehicles malfunction.
The service debuting Dec 5 marks a significant milestone for Waymo, a company that began as a secretive project within Google in 2009. Since then, its cars have robotically logged more 10 million miles on public roads in 25 cities in California, Arizona, Washington, Michigan and Georgia while getting into only a few accidents – mostly fender benders.
ShopKirana raises US$2M from Japan’s Incubate Fund, others [The Economic Times]
Business to business e-commerce startup ShopKirana said that it had raised US$2 million in funding from Info Edge, along with AET Fund, Akatsuki and Incubate Fund from Japan and Better Capital AngelList syndicate.
The funds would be used to expand the business, with the aim of launching in ten cities next year, targeting one lakh retailers and connecting farmers with retailers, said co-founder Sumit Ghorawat.
Set up by Ghorawat, Deepak Dhanotiya, and Tanutejas Saraswat, ShopKirana partners with retailers by becoming part of their supply chain and acts as a go-to-market channel for products and services.
MDEC chief Yasmin Mahmood steps down; to join a tech venture in Jakarta [e27]
Yasmin Mahmood has stepped down as the CEO of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) after helming the organisation for more than four years. The resignation will be effective 15 January 2019.
In a statement posted on the MDEC site, Mahmood said she would pursue a role with a tech venture in Jakarta.
