A 7-month pregnant woman suspected to be a drug abuser tried evading Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers by climbing out the window of an 11th-floor unit and descending to the aircon ledge a few storeys below.
CNB said in a Facebook post on July 20 that officers knocked at the woman’s unit and identified themselves. A female occupant was then seen climbing out the unit’s window and scaling down to the 8th storey, near the aircon ledge.
“An officer immediately rushed to a stairway near the subject’s location and calmed her down such that she did not endanger herself any further,” said CNB.
The woman was rescued unharmed by Singapore Civil Defence Force officers and warded in hospital for observation as she was heavily pregnant.
After ensuring the woman’s safety, officers gained entry into her unit, where they found her seven-year-old son alone, along with drug paraphernalia.
Arrangements were made for the boy’s welfare, and he was subsequently placed in the safe custody of a next-of-kin, added CNB.
“A heart-wrenching scene for all involved – the suspected abuser, the child, and the officers, all except for the trafficker who had been profiting off her addiction,” said CNB.
A number of netizens agreed that Singapore’s strict drug laws are enforced to deter such incidents.
“Not that I’m inhumane, but where are the people calling for the death sentence to be abolished? Y’all feel the pain when it happens to your loved ones. Ever thought about the truly innocent ones such as the kids?” said Facebook user Alex Tan in a comment with over 130 likes.
“Without the death penalty, this would be a common occurrence. The fact that so many that commented are shocked to know of such news shows that our strict drug laws are good deterrence against drug trafficking/abuse,” added Facebook user Gillian Tan. /TISG
