World’s 22 richest men have more than all women in Africa: Oxfam

0

The number of billionaires has doubled in the past decade and the world’s 22 richest men now have more wealth than all the women in Africa, Oxfam said Monday in an appeal to the Davos elite to get serious about inequality.

“Our broken economies are lining the pockets of billionaires and big business at the expense of ordinary men and women. No wonder people are starting to question whether billionaires should even exist,” Oxfam’s India head Amitabh Behar said.

“Women and girls are among those who benefit least from today’s economic system,” Behar said ahead of the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, where he will represent Oxfam.

There will be at least 119 billionaires worth about $500 billion attending Davos this year, Bloomberg reported, with the highest contingents coming from the United States, India and Russia.

“The very top of the economic pyramid sees trillions of dollars of wealth in the hands of a very small group of people, predominantly men,” the Oxfam report said.

“Their wealth is already extreme, and our broken economy concentrates more and more wealth into these few hands,” it said.

The report said women and girls put in 12.5 billion hours of unpaid care work each and every day, estimated to be worth at least $10.8 trillion a year.

Oxfam’s annual report on global inequality is traditionally released just before the forum opens on Tuesday in the Swiss Alpine resort.

– Startling stats -It had some astonishing statistics.

If the world’s richest one percent paid just 0.5 percent extra tax on their wealth for 10 years, it would equal the investment needed to create 117 million new jobs in elderly and child care, education and health, Oxfam said.

Oxfam’s figures are based on data from Forbes magazine and Swiss bank Credit Suisse, but they are disputed by some economists.

The numbers show that 2,153 billionaires now have more wealth than the 4.6 billion poorest people on the planet.

Women and girls are burdened in particular because they are most often care givers that keep “the wheels of our economies, businesses and societies moving,” Behar said.

They “often have little time to get an education, earn a decent living or have a say in how our societies are run,” and “are therefore trapped at the bottom of the economy,” he added.

“Across the globe, 42 percent of women cannot get jobs because they are responsible for all the caregiving, compared to just six percent of men,” Oxfam figures showed.

The report called on world governments to “build a human economy that is feminist and values what truly matters to society, rather than fuelling an endless pursuit of profit and wealth”.

Iran says it may pull out of nuclear treaty over Europe dispute

Iran's Bushehr plant - Wikipedia

Iran said Monday it will consider withdrawing from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) if a dispute over its atomic programme goes before the UN Security Council.

Britain, France and Germany launched a process last week charging Iran with failing to observe the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal, a move that could eventually see the Security Council reimpose international sanctions on the country.

Iran has accused the three EU member states of inaction over sanctions the United States reimposed on it after unilaterally withdrawing from the landmark accord in 2018.

The European move “has no legal basis” and if they take further measures “Iran’s withdrawal from the NPT will be considered,” Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was quoted as saying by the Iranian parliament’s website.

The landmark 2015 deal reached with Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States gave Iran relief from sanctions in return for curbs on its nuclear programme.

Since the US pullout, Iran has progressively rolled back its commitments to the accord — the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action — in retaliation.

It has hit out at the three European nations that remain party to the JCPOA for failing to live up to their promises to ease the impact of US sanctions on its oil-based economy.

“If the Europeans return to the commitments, Iran will also stop reducing its commitments, but if the Europeans continue as they have been… we have different options,” said Zarif.

The foreign minister said Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani had warned former EU foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini about such consequences in three letters sent in 2018.

“It was stated in the president’s letter that if this issue is referred to the Security Council, Iran’s withdrawal from the NPT will be discussed but before that we can consider other (options),” he said.

European officials have made it clear that the decision to trigger the dispute resolution mechanism was made in a bid to bring Iran back into compliance and save the accord.

But Iran’s foreign ministry on Monday warned more measures could be taken in retaliation for the European move.

“If these talks continue, Iran is formulating a final and even more effective” measure regarding the nuclear deal, spokesman Abbas Mousavi told a news conference in Tehran.

Asked by reporters to elaborate, Mousavi said it would be a “serious” measure, but he gave no further details.

“Different options are on the table for Iran that will be announced if a consensus is reached” by its leaders, he said.

Iran has stressed the steps it has taken to roll back the nuclear deal can be reversed if its interests are realised.

SARS-like virus spreads in China, reaches another Asian country

A new SARS-like virus has killed a third person, spread around China and reached another Asian country, authorities said Monday, fuelling fears of a major outbreak as millions begin travelling for the Lunar New Year in humanity’s biggest migration.

The new coronavirus strain, first discovered in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, has caused alarm because of its connection to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which killed nearly 650 people across mainland China and Hong Kong in 2002-2003.

Wuhan has 11 million inhabitants and serves as a major transport hub, including during the annual Lunar New Year holiday which begins later this week and sees hundreds of millions of Chinese people travel across the country to visit family.

Weighing in on the matter for the first time, Chinese President Xi Jinping said Monday that safeguarding people’s lives should be given “top priority” and that the spread of the epidemic “should be resolutely contained”, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

The total number of people diagnosed with the virus rose to 217 as 136 new cases were found over the weekend in Wuhan, 15 in southern Guangdong province and five in Beijing, according to CCTV.

A third person died in Wuhan, the local health commission said.

South Korea on Monday reported its first case — a 35-year-old woman who flew in from Wuhan. Thailand and Japan have previously confirmed a total of three cases — all of whom had visited the Chinese city.

No human-to-human transmission has been confirmed so far, but authorities have not ruled out the possibility.

There are also seven suspected cases in Shanghai and four provinces and regions in the east, south and southwest of the country.

“Experts believe that the current epidemic situation can still be controlled,” the National Health Commission said Sunday.

But the commission acknowledged that the source of the coronavirus and its mode of transmission have yet to be known.

The virus did not slow down the annual holiday travel rush, though some travellers wore masks at crowded railway stations in Beijing and Shanghai.

“Watching the news, I do feel a little worried. But I haven’t taken precautionary measures beyond wearing regular masks,” said Li Yang, a 28-year-old account manager who was heading home to the northern region of Inner Mongolia for the Lunar New Year.

– Detection measures -A seafood market is believed to be the centre of the outbreak in Wuhan, but health officials have reported that some patients had no history of contact with the facility.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Twitter Monday that “an animal source seems the most likely primary source” with “some limited human-to-human transmission occurring between close contacts”.

It said the new cases in China were the result of “increased searching and testing for (the virus) among people sick with respiratory illness”.

Scientists with the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis at Imperial College in London warned in a paper published Friday that the number of cases in the city was likely to be closer to 1,700, much higher than the figure officially identified.

Wuhan authorities said they have installed infrared thermometers at airports, railway stations and coach stations across the city. Passengers with fevers were being registered, given masks and taken to medical institutions.

State TV footage aired Monday showed medical staff working inside an isolation ward at a Wuhan hospital in full-body suits.

In Hong Kong, health officials announced they were expanding their enhanced checks on arrivals to include anyone coming in from Hubei province, not just Wuhan, its capital. Over 100 people are being monitored in the city.

Passengers are also being screened at some airports in Thailand and the United States.

In Wuhan, 170 people are still being treated at hospital, including nine in critical condition, the city health commission said, adding that 25 people have been discharged so far.

Chinese state media moved to calm the mood as discussion about the coronavirus spreading to other Chinese cities swelled on social media.

Nationalist tabloid Global Times called for better handling of the new virus than that of the 2003 SARS outbreak.

The foreign ministry said Monday that Beijing had informed the WHO and other countries about the virus “in a timely manner”.

The Kylie Cosmetics founder is also paying homage to her mother’s talent as an entrepreneur. Kylie Jenner, now 22, was named the world’s youngest self-made billionaire last year.

She has appeared on the cover of Forbes magazine twice, sharing with the publication that her success was due to the encouragement of her parents.

Her parents had advised her to save her own money and spend her own money.

Last month, her family impersonated her and this “Lil Kris” picture may be her comeback at them.

As part of fun and games, Kourtney Kardashian said on Keeping Up With The Kardashians that Kris asked everybody to come impersonating another family member during dinner.

Kylie’s sister Kendall did a good impersonation of her, although exaggerating Kylie’s approach of overlining her lips.

Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock sing Happy Birthday to Betty White

Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock sang Happy Birthday to Betty White who turned 98 recently. All three of them co-starred in 2009’s The Proposal where White played the part of Reynold’s grandmother.

Since acting in the film, the three of them have become close. Reynolds enjoys using social media to celebrate his onscreen grandmother’s birthday. Back in 2017, Reynolds uploaded a photo of himself as Deadpool together with a martini and a hotdog next to a framed photo of White.

Betty White’s career took off years ago when she starred in the The Golden Girls among others. Her latest work was in Toy Story 4,where she did a voice over. She also played that role on Disney+’s Forky Asks A Question. Her skills have garnered attention from fans and thespians alike. Chris Evans also wants to work with her.

Reynolds and Bullock sang Happy Birthday to White in a video that was uploaded to Reynold’s social media accounts. The video starts off well and then in the middle of it, they started to become competitive with each other.

Bullock sang that she loves White more than Ryan while Reynolds sang that Ryan loves White more than Sandy (Sandra).

Reynolds then continues singing, asking what does Sandy do for White every year and if she shows up with flowers, wearing black socks and gold bracelets as White requested.

Bullock ends the video sweetly by saying she loves White while Reynolds starts to cry. Celebrating White’s 98th birthday is definitely history in the making. With Reynolds and Bullock’s tribute to White, it is worth giving her credit for what is due. Throughout her career, White has become an iconic comedic actress who gets better with age.

The Golden Girls actress’s personality is so full of life. Even though The Golden Girls series concluded many years ago, new generations are still discovering and enjoying the show.

MOM: 3 workplace fatalities in 2020 to date

Singapore-The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) urged companies to ensure safe working conditions for workers following three workplace-related fatal accidents since the year started.

The first accident involved a worker who was reportedly crushed by a pallet of glass cylinders that fell over him. The crane operator at the construction site turned the crane which then overturned the pallet. The worker was dead when paramedics arrived.

The second accident involved a worker who was struck by a runner which fell from a form work structure. He was taken to the hospital but eventually succumbed to his injuries.

The third accident involved a worker who fell from a boat and into the sea.

There were three workplace fatalities since the start of 2020. The first worker was crushed by a toppled pallet of gas…

Posted by Singapore Ministry of Manpower on Saturday, January 18, 2020

The MOM is concerned by the rate of fatal accidents in just the last three weeks.

“With the festive period approaching, some firms may ramp up work activities to meet deadlines. MOM reminds all companies of the need to review work practices and ensure that the necessary safeguards are in place. All workers deserve a safe working environment and to return home safe and healthy to their loved ones,” the MOM said in a Facebook post.

The MOM along with the Workplace Safety & Health Council (WSH Council) conducted inspections at around 230 worksites and identified violations in safety standards.

These violations include unsafe scaffolding without toe boards and guardrails and excavations or holes left uncovered and/or without barriers.

It was also found that some work sites had limited to no access point for their workers to get into the work area.

MOM issued stop-work orders (SWO) to four work places found in violation of safety standards. The SWO is enforced for three weeks until the company addresses the lapses.

Companies must make it their continued priority to create safer and healthier workplaces that promote the well-being of their workers,” the MOM added. /TISG

Single mum arrested at her office for having unpaid Service and Conservancy Charges

Socio-Political activist Gilbert Goh posted on social media about a single mother who was arrested and put in police lock-up for having unpaid Service and Conservancy Charges (S&CC).

Mr Goh wrote that he was approached by the woman’s brother for help and that he “felt shocked” to learn that the woman who had a 16-year-old son was arrested at her office.

She stayed in the police lock-up for close to 10 hours before being released and had an arrears of S$2,150.

In a Facebook post yesterday (Jan 19), Mr Goh wrote that her S&CC fees were unpaid for 18 months since April 2018.

He added that the single-mother worked as a sales promoter earning a monthly salary of about S$1,000. He added: “each time she couldn’t pay the monthly instalment of $159, the town council will send in a legal reminder which costs about $200 – further aggravating the S & C default”.

“It’s akin to paying a loan shark but this time it’s a legalised one” he said.

Mr Goh also shared that out of her total arrears, 40 per cent or S$937 went to other miscellaneous costs such as a penalty charge of S$310 and legal fees of S$627. He added that the town council was willing to waive the penalty fee of S$310 but not the legal charge.

In speaking with her, Mr Goh asked why she did not rent out a room in her flat to earn extra money. She told him that she was uncomfortable living with strangers under the same household.

He wrote: “The small single-parent family does not receive any maintenance from the ex- husband and the mum is working 12-hour shift for seven days a week trying to keep up with all her bills especially the S & C one which may invite a jail sentence if not properly paid”.

Mr Goh told the woman that she was fortunate she was not immediately jailed and added that prolonged non-payment of S&CC bills can land a person in jail. He also noted that she still has to pay up the default after the prison discharge. “It’s probable that the single mum may have ignored numerous court orders triggering a warrant of arrest as a result”, he wrote.

He also called for people to donate to the woman saying: “Any Good Samaritan can pay directly to the person’s town council account number through AXS online to offset the default”.

TISG has reached out to the mother for further comment. /TISG

Singaporeans “riled by globalisation of job market”: International news group

Singapore — A report from a global news group notes that Singaporeans are becoming increasingly uneasy with the globalisation of jobs as competition has become harder amidst the economic slowdown.

The Jan 19 report, entitled “Globalization of Job Market Riles Singapore Locals”, published in In-Depth News (IDN), the flagship agency of the International Press Syndicate, notes that the high population of foreign nationals is increasingly seen as a threat by locals when it comes to vying for jobs (although the report erroneously cites the population of Singapore as four million with one million foreign nationals, while the population stood at 5.7 million in June 2019, of which 1.68 million are non-residents).

The report states that the Government has had to take action against local businesses that have not followed the Fair Consideration Framework, which requires business owners to advertise on the national Job Bank for at least a fortnight job openings for positions that have a salary of less than S$15,000 a month before an Employment Pass for a foreign national can be sought.

Ms Josephine Teo, the Manpower Minister, said earlier this month “in places where the workforce is multinational, like Singapore, perceptions of discrimination against locals are particularly toxic”, adding that there have been more than 2,000 complaints of discrimination of locals in the last four years that the Tripartite Alliance for Fair and Progressive Employment Practices has followed up on.

The IDN report quotes Kim Tan, a middle-aged technology professional, as saying: “The employment issue in Singapore is a complicated one. Locals, especially those after 40s, are finding it hard to get jobs that could provide them with remuneration to educate children and look after aging parents.”

“The 40s to 50s age group looses jobs at a stage in their lives when they can least afford it,” he added. “Searching for their inability to get jobs, many identify the liberal immigration policies by the Singapore government as the major reason.”

Employers sometimes choose to hire foreigners since they are contractually obligated to stay at that job for a certain amount of time.

Ms Elizabeth Wong, a businesswoman, told IDN: “It is not easy to run a small business if the Singapore staff job hop all the time.

“If I get a foreign worker, she will be ‘bonded’ to the job for at least 2 years because the Work Permit is linked to the job.”

“It is no problem for MNCs (multinational companies) but for SMEs it is a big problem. I bring in good experienced foreigners who are able to train locals.”

He believes that “the Government needs to look at Employment Pass applications on a case-by-case basis. It is SMEs, not MNCs, that are innovating here. Applying this framework across the board will kill local start-ups.”

Kim Tan added that foreigners are generally more flexible workers than locals because “they are more likely to work overtime, unlike their local counterparts who might have to take care of their children and parents. Foreign workers’ lower flexibility in changing jobs makes them more attractive to employers who are frustrated with high turnover rates.”

He said this is an issue for the Government to address.

“The challenge for the Singapore Government is to maintain a balance between ensuring employment for locals and letting in quality foreigners to add to the talent pool.” -/TISG

The Progress Singapore Party celebrated its first anniversary on Friday (Jan 17) and, in a Facebook post, its founder, Dr Tan Cheng Bock, looked back and noted how far the party had come.

Dr Tan, who is party Secretary-General, wrote that the celebrations were a “joyous family occasion”, adding that, “one year ago, PSP started with just a few good men and women. These were loyal activists who had stuck with me through good and bad times. Many were retirees like myself responding to conscience and a sense of duty”.

He said that many sceptics doubted if the team he initially assembled could make any difference or even attract others to join the party. He wrote, “but one year on, we have had an outstandingly overwhelming response”.

Dr Tan added that, along with a growing list of members and even non-member volunteers, “I am heartened to see Singaporeans — patriotic men and women, young and evergreen, white and blue-collar — all stepping forward from all walks of life.”

At the anniversary dinner on Friday, Dr Tan delivered the keynote address and introduced the new PSP Central Executive Committee (CEC) leadership, the party’s new song and its mascot “Otica, The Otter”.

In concluding the post, he said: “It was a night and anniversary to remember. Please allow me to share the PSP song that we launched at the dinner. We have only just begun but let’s keep making history together — For Country, For People!” /TISG

Pink Dot’s next LGBTQ rally set for June 27

Singapore—The next Pink Dot event has been set for June 27 of this year, according to a Facebook post from Saturday morning (June 18). As always, the venue for the rally, which is done in support of the LGBTQ community in Singapore, will be at Hong Lim Park.

The announcement sought to clarify that under a law passed in October 2016, only Singaporean citizens and Permanent Residents (PR) may attend the rally. At the end of the post it said,  “Government say one, not we say one ah!”

No other details have been added as yet, although the public can expect more information about it to be revealed in the days and weeks leading up to the event.

Save the date: Pink Dot 12 is happening on 27th June 2020 at Hong Lim Park! See you there!Only Singaporeans and PRs may…

Posted by Pink Dot SG on Friday, January 17, 2020

“Pink Dot SG is a movement for a stronger, more open and inclusive Singapore,” reads the about section of the organisation’s Facebook page. “The rally aims to raise public awareness about issues faced by LGBTQ Singaporeans and to signal to LGBTQ people here that they are loved and valued in Singapore. With openness and acceptance, we hope to bring LGBTQ Singaporeans closer to their family, friends and communities.”

Pink Dot’s last rally, which had an accompanying concert, was held on June 29, with thousands of attendees descending upon Hong Lim Park on the last Saturday of Pride Month, when support for the LGBTQ+ community was seen in big parades and demonstrations all over the world.

Significantly, last year’s rally was attended by the Prime Minister’s brother, Lee Hsien Yang, a fact that the media reported about. However, The Straits Times (ST) which originally mentioned that Mr Lee, his family and in-laws had attended the rally, edited out this portion in a later edition of the story, which Pink Dot called out on its Facebook page.

By all accounts, 2019’a Pink Dot 11, in spite of stormy weather, was well-attended indeed. The highlight of the evening was the message “REPEAL 377-A,” referring to the section of Singapore’s Penal Code that criminalises sexual activity between men, a holdover from the country’s colonial past. A similar section had been repealed in India just in 2018 giving rise to calls for Singapore to follow suit.

By early evening on June 29, Pink Dot’s had posted a photo on its Facebook page of Lee Hsien Yang, his wife, their son Li Huanwu and his husband, Dr Heng Yirui, along with Dr Heng’s parents, all dressed in pink to mark the occasion, standing in a group with their arms around one another.

Li Huanwu, the nephew of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and Heng Yirui, a veterinarian, were married in South Africa on May 24, 2019.

In June of 2018, Mr Li came out publicly as a member of the LGBT community when he and Dr Heng were featured in the campaign called Out in Singapore, whose goal was to encourage acceptance and support for “LGBTQ persons who wish to come out to family, friends, and peers in the community.”

The couple posed in a black and white photo with their arms around each other. Previous to outing himself, he had been vocal in his support for Pink Dot, the yearly event starting from 2009 that supports the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in Singapore. -/TISG
