MP commends boy who held umbrella to protect bus passengers from the rain

SINGAPORE: Tampines GRC MP Baey Yam Keng has issued a letter of commendation to the boy who won widespread praise online after he was spotted holding an umbrella for disembarking bus passengers.

Mr Baey, Senior Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Sustainability and Environment and the Ministry of Transport, honoured the young Singaporean at a networking session at the Caring Carnival this week. Revealing that the boy, Hwee Tze from Springfield Secondary School, stayed on to shelter passengers disembarking from six buses, Mr Baey said: “This is an example that every one of us, regardless of age or gender, can play a part in making commutes much more pleasant.”

Hwee Tze won hearts in September when he was spotted shielding bus passengers from the rain as they crossed from their bus into the bus shelter at a bus stop along Punggol Road.

A netizen who had benefited from the young boy’s deed shared a video of him on the sgfollowsall Facebook page, saying Hwee Tze has the “heart of a king”. The video quickly went viral, with Singaporeans showering the young boy with praise for his generosity and kindness.

NEA: More thundery showers are expected

0

SINGAPORE: On Thursday, Nov 16, the National Environment Agency (NEA) posted on their Facebook page that more thundery showers are expected for the rest of Nov 2023. Inter-monsoon conditions currently prevail over Singapore, ushering in a period of light and variable low-level winds.

As NEA posted, the upcoming fortnight, the monsoon rain band is expected to hover near the equatorial region, bringing thundery showers to Singapore. Residents can anticipate short-duration thundery showers, potentially widespread and heavy on some days, with total rainfall forecasted to be above average across the island.

In the second half of November, warm conditions are on the horizon. Daily temperatures are projected to range between 24 and 34 degrees Celsius, possibly reaching a high of around 35 degrees Celsius on sunnier days when clouds are scarce.

Reflecting on the past two weeks, Nov 1 to Nov 15, the region experienced inter-monsoon conditions, marked by predominantly light and variable winds. Thundery showers occurred mainly in the afternoons, with a notable episode on Nov 7, 2023, when widespread moderate to heavy thundery showers drenched many parts of the island. Woodlands recorded the highest daily rainfall of 69.7 mm during this period.

The first half of November was characterised by generally warm weather, with daily maximum temperatures consistently surpassing 33 degrees Celsius. Notably, Newton recorded the highest daily maximum temperature of 35.8 degrees Celsius on Nov 3, 2023, tying the record for the highest daily maximum temperature in Singapore for November since records began in 1929.

Rainfall distribution varied across the island during the initial half of November 2023. Queenstown experienced a significant 84 per cent below-average rainfall, while Simei recorded 38 per cent above the average.

For perspective, historical climate statistics for November based on the climatological reference period of 1991-2020 indicate an average daily maximum temperature of 31.2 degrees Celsius, an average daily minimum temperature of 24.6 degrees Celsius, and an average monthly temperature of 27.2 degrees Celsius.

The historical extremes for November include the highest monthly mean daily maximum temperature of 32.3 degrees Celsius recorded in 2019 and the lowest monthly mean daily minimum temperature of 22.4 degrees Celsius noted in 1933.

Moreover, the highest monthly rainfall recorded in November was 521.5 mm in 1874, while the lowest was 53.5 mm in 1981. These statistics provide valuable context for understanding the climate trends in Singapore during November.

Singapore dominates Asian Pencak Silat Championship

0

SINGAPORE: In a strong affirmation that indicates their readiness for the upcoming World Pencak Silat Championships next month, Team Singapore emerged as the overall champions in two recent tournaments held in the United Arab Emirates – the 7th Asian Pencak Silat Championship (APSC) and the 1st Middle East Open Pencak Silat Championship (MEPSC).

Held concurrently from Nov 9 to 12 at Rashid Bin Hamdan Hall, Al-Nasr Club, in Dubai, both competitions showcased Singapore’s silat exponents’ exceptional skills and determination for success. Singapore’s contingent secured a remarkable 21 medals at APSC (11 gold, five silver, and five bronze) and an astounding 41 medals at the inaugural MEPSC (31 gold, seven silver, and three bronze).

Since Singapore hosted the first competition in 2011, the Asian Pencak Silat Championship has become a prominent event in the sport’s calendar. The Singapore Silat Federation has demonstrated an upward trajectory, consistently increasing its gold medal tally each edition. This year, the national team surpassed its previous gold medal haul, bringing home three more gold medals compared to 2022.

At the APSC, Singapore clinched four gold medals in the artistic events. Singapore also won the gold medal in the artistic female category through Amirah Sahrin, Nur Ashikin Zulkifli, and Iffah Batrisyia Noh.

The 2023 Sportsman of the Year, Sheik Farhan Sheik Alau’ddin and his brother Sheik Ferdous, contributed a gold medal each in the Class J and I categories, respectively. Sheikh Farhan, a multiple world champion, also won the gold medal at the 2023 SEA Games. Sheik Ferdous was pleased with his improved performance after winning the silver medal twice in the Class G category in the previous two SEA Games.

“Winning this competition upped my confidence and tells me that my preparations and daily routine are moving me in the right direction. I am really happy that I am reaping the fruits of my labour. I hope to win at the world championships and remain victorious for many years to come,” shared Sheik Ferdous with The Independent Singapore.

For his gold medal-winning performance, Sheik Ferdous was named the best athlete for the APSC competition and fellow Team Singapore silat exponent Aura Aydria Putri Soffian, who won the gold medal in the Junior Female <39 category, was named as the best athlete in the Middle East Open Pencak Silat Championship. The other gold medals in the class matches won by the Singapore silat exponents at the 7th Asian Pencak Silat Championship are Dhani Andika Razali, Shaiman Johanis, Ahmad Hanin Abdul Rahim, Nurshahfareeq Shahrudin, and Nur Tuhfah Izzah.

PAP’s Sengkang East branch chairperson Marcus Loh congratulated fellow resident and Singapore athletes for making the nation proud and winning medals in both competitions.

“Big congratulations to Putri Zara for clinching two gold medals – one in the Artistic Singles and the other in the Match (Combat) category at the 1st Middle East Open Pencak Silat Championship! Thank you – and your fellow Team Singapore athletes for representing Singapore, and the aspirations of your fellow residents in Sengkang East, so brilliantly on the world stage!”

OCBC Bank acquires Commonwealth Bank of Australia’s Indonesian subsidiary for approximately S$191M

0

SINGAPORE: OCBC, Southeast Asia’s second-largest lender and one of Singapore’s major banks, is set to acquire Commonwealth Bank of Australia’s (CBA) Indonesian unit, PT Bank Commonwealth, for approximately $191 million.

The deal, which involves purchasing CBA’s 99% stake, is slated to conclude in the second or third quarter of the upcoming year, subject to regulatory approvals.

This marks OCBC’s first acquisition under the leadership of Group CEO Helen Wong, who assumed the role in 2021, becoming the first woman to lead the bank. Wong, recognized in Forbes Asia’s Power Businesswomen list in 2021, has strategically positioned OCBC to capitalize on growing business connections between China and Southeast Asia.

The acquisition is designed to bolster OCBC Indonesia’s capabilities in delivering comprehensive financial services, targeting consumer and SME segments.

Parwati Surjaudaja, President-Director of OCBC Indonesia, emphasized that the move is intended to strengthen the bank’s position in the Indonesian market.

PT Bank Commonwealth, the target of the acquisition, boasts over 1.2 million customers and total assets of A$1.8 billion as of June. With a focus on retail, SMEs, wealth management, and automotive financing, the bank aligns with OCBC’s strategy to expand its product and service offerings in Indonesia.

As of September, OCBC Indonesia stands as the fourth-largest private sector bank in Indonesia, with total assets of 247 trillion rupiah ($16 billion) and a 10% increase in disbursed loans compared to last year.

For CBA, the sale of PT Bank Commonwealth aligns with its broader strategy of concentrating on retail banking in Australia and New Zealand, shedding non-core businesses.

5 Common Credit Mistakes to Avoid Making

This is a guest contribution by Credit Bureau Singapore, as part of a partnership between CBS and AMTD PolicyPal Group (PolicyPal and ValueChampion), in line with our mission to empower people with financial knowledge and help them attain financial wellness.

As financially savvy consumers, we are no strangers to the benefits of using credit cards and personal loans. Both credit cards and personal loans are considered unsecured loans and can come in very handy when making big-ticket purchases. Credit cards also offer you the ability to maximise your everyday purchases by rewarding you with cashback and reward points as you spend.

With many retail banks and financial institutions in Singapore offering a wide range of credit facilities, you are bound to find a credit card or personal loan that suits your individual interest rates or loan repayment tenure needs.

However, managing such credit facilities can be a complex and delicate task. Many consumers fall into the trap of making common credit mistakes that can have long-lasting consequences on their financial well-being as well as their credit reports.

Let’s explore what exactly some of the more common credit traps are and how you as a smart spender can steer clear of them.

Common Credit Traps To Avoid

1. Charging All Payments To Instalment Payment Plans (IPPs).

An Instalment Payment Plan (IPP) is a plan where a consumer only has to pay a percentage of the cost upfront when they make a purchase. The rest of the payments are paid periodically over the course of the next few months until the item is fully paid off. Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) services are an example of an IPP. Some credit cards also offer IPPs such as 6 to 12-month interest-free instalment plans.

IPPs might give you the false perception that you can afford an item. By slicing up the total cost of a product into smaller payments, IPPs make items that were previously out of your budget feel attainable. This can lead to impulsive buying. While using IPPS may feel good in the short run, without prudent use, the debt you accumulate through these payment plans can quickly snowball out of control.

It is important to be practical and only buy items if you can afford the sticker price upfront so that you do not overspend on items you don’t need.

2. Only Paying The Minimum Due Amount

For most banks, the minimum monthly payment required so as not to incur late charge penalties is only S$50. Many consumers falsely view credit cards as “free money”, whereby they can freely spend as they please and all they have to do in return is make a S$50 payment at the end of the month.

However, credit cards charge extremely high interest rates on any outstanding debt. The average credit card interest rate is a whopping 25%. By not paying your monthly credit card bill in full every month, your outstanding balances will accumulate and compound at these high interest rates which can result in your credit card total outstanding bill quickly becoming very overwhelming.

As credit cards have one of the highest interest rate rates out there, the last thing you want to do is place yourself in a situation where you are struggling to pay off all the interest you have accrued on top of your outstanding bills.

Not to mention, making only the minimum payment will have a detrimental effect on your credit score. This will negatively affect you down the road if you are looking to take out any new loans, such as a mortgage loan. Allowing your credit card debt to accumulate with no plans on repaying it fully can have long-lasting negative impacts on other major financial goals you may have in various aspects of your life.

If you are having trouble remembering to pay your credit payments in full every month, set up monthly calendar reminders, or better yet, automatic GIRO payments. This way, you will never be caught off guard and have to pay credit card interest again.

3. Overlooking The Terms And Conditions.

It is imperative that you know what you are signing up for before applying for any credit facility. Take a moment to read through the terms and conditions of any credit facility you are looking to acquire so that you have a good understanding of any interest-free repayment periods or late payment penalty charges. You can also clear any doubts you have with the lender. This will allow you to have a smoother debt repayment journey as you will not be blindsided by any clauses that you might not have been aware of.

For example, some personal loans charge a prepayment fee if you pay back the loan in full before a predetermined period. Make sure you are aware of any such hidden fees so that you can prevent yourself from incurring unnecessary charges.

4. Exceeding Your Credit Limit

Some banks or credit card issuers allow you to spend beyond your assigned credit limit with an over-limit fee. You should be mindful of the repercussions if you have a habit of maxing out your credit limit, especially if you are not confident in repaying back the full amount on time.

Not only does the high credit card interest make paying off credit card debt particularly difficult, having a high credit utilisation ratio will also have a negative influence on your credit score.

Some banks might grant you special credit limit increases if you need to make a large transaction urgently. That being said, it is advisable to use this feature sparingly. If you find that you tend to overspend on your credit lines, you can also write to your bank to request to lower your credit limit across all your credit lines.

5. Neglecting Your Credit Report.

Your credit report gives you a comprehensive overview of all the credit facilities you owe across all retail banks and major financial institutions in Singapore. Most individuals do not regularly check their credit reports as they find it to be confusing or intimidating.

However, checking your credit report on a regular basis will give you the first line of defence in ensuring your credit records are in order. Instead of assuming that everything is in order, you can investigate for yourself and find out the true state of your financial health.

If you want to view your credit report, you can obtain a complimentary credit report from Credit Bureau (Singapore) within 30 calendar days after you make a new credit application with a bank or financial institution.

Use Credit Responsibly

Borrowing beyond your means can leave you struggling financially as you fall further into debt. Consider your financial standing, including all other existing loans, before applying for any additional credit facilities.

While it may be easy to just open new credit facilities when you are strapped for cash and just put off repaying them until a later date, this will only snowball, causing your financial situation to get worse in the long run. Responsible credit management is an investment in your financial well-being. The effort you put into managing your credit and actively avoiding the above mistakes will pay off tenfold in the long run.

Where Can I Learn More About My Credit Report?

You can head over to the Credit Bureau Singapore’s website to learn more about what Credit Bureau Singapore does and how your credit report affects you. You can also view a sample credit report with detailed explanations here to get a robust understanding of how to interpret a credit report so that you can better assess your own credit health.

Student Loan Debts: Aspiration in an era of soaring tuition

0

Student Loan

In the pursuit of knowledge and a brighter future, the rising cost of higher education has become a formidable barrier. The halls of universities, once seen as gateways to opportunity, have now become gatekeepers armed with exorbitant tuition fees. As the cost of living rises, so does the price tag on education, leaving students grappling with student loan debts that seem unsolvable.

Student Loan Debt Crisis

In the United States, the crisis regarding student loan debts has reached staggering proportions. The weight of this debt is not merely financial; it is emotional, and psychological, and has far-reaching consequences that echo through the lives of those ensnared by its grasp.

The consequences of shouldering this burden are felt long after the cap and gown are tucked away. Graduates are forced to postpone life milestones such as homeownership, marriage, and starting a family as they navigate the treacherous waters of loan repayment. The specter of debt looms over every career choice, often forcing graduates into high-paying jobs rather than pursuing their passions or contributing to society in ways that extend beyond the bottom line.

Systemic Problem

Governments, institutions, and society at large must confront this crisis head-on. The rising cost of education and the crippling burden of student loan debt are not isolated issues but symptoms of a larger, systemic problem. Investment in education is an investment in the future. It’s time the government reassesses its priorities.

Financial Servitude

In the face of this daunting challenge, a collective voice must rise from the lecture halls, echoing the sentiment that education should be a catalyst for progress, not a shackle of financial servitude. Only then can we redefine the narrative surrounding higher education, turning it back into a beacon of enlightenment and empowerment rather than a weighty burden carried by generations to come.

Extreme weather and its impact on the 2024 elections

0

weather

An unexpected player has entered the political arena, threatening to reshape the landscape in ways unforeseen by even the most seasoned political analysts – extreme weather events.

The growing frequency and intensity of hurricanes, wildfires, floods, and other climate-related disasters are casting a shadow over the electoral process, forcing candidates to confront the undeniable impact of climate change on the nation’s future.

These disasters not only bring immediate devastation but also shine a spotlight on the candidates’ stances on climate change, environmental policies, and disaster response capabilities.

Candidates and Climate Change

The electorate is no longer willing to accept vague promises or dismissive attitudes toward environmental issues. They are forced to articulate comprehensive strategies for mitigating climate change, adapting to its impacts, and transitioning to sustainable energy sources.

Disaster Response and Leadership

The 2024 election will hinge on how well each candidate can demonstrate leadership in the face of disaster, showcasing their capacity to mobilize resources, coordinate emergency responses, and implement policies that promote resilience and recovery.

Battleground States

Certain states are more vulnerable to specific types of extreme weather, creating a complex political landscape. How candidates address the challenges of each region could sway voters adding another layer of complexity to their campaign strategies.

Role of Environmental Activism

The rise of environmental activism and grassroots movements has further intensified the spotlight on the intersection of extreme weather and politics. Candidates aligned with these movements and demonstrate a commitment to environmental sustainability will find resonance in a growing segment of the electorate.

Extreme Weather and Voters

As voters grapple with the immediate and long-term consequences of climate change, the outcome of the election will be determined not only by political ideologies but also by the candidates’ ability to address the pressing issue of our time – the changing climate that affects us all.

Border fence holes allow migrants to enter the US border with ease

0

Migrant crisis, border wall, legal showdown, Border fence

Revelation from residents along the United States-Mexico border has reported that migrants are streaming through holes in the existing fence daily, waiting for border patrol officers to pick them up for processing.

Through border fence holes

Jacumba resident Jerry Shuster, who has lived in the town for four decades, expressed his concern to NBC News San Diego, revealing that dozens of individuals have crossed into the U.S. through border holes in the fence in recent months. Shuster emphasized the ease with which migrants enter, stating, “They just come in like nothing to it. They walk right into our country.”

Shuster, an immigrant himself who arrived in the U.S. from the former Yugoslavia in the late 1960s, highlighted the boldness of some crossings, occurring even in broad daylight. “They come around the side of the border, they walk onto our property, and they stay until they get picked up,” he added.

Frustrated and confused

Brian Silvas, another resident, shared his experience with CNN, stating that his dogs, initially alert to large groups crossing onto his border property, have now grown accustomed to the frequent occurrences. Expressing frustration, Silvas remarked, “If I had the money, I would build my own wall right here!” Silvas, who purchased his 78-acre property two years ago, echoes the growing sentiment among residents who feel the need to take matters into their own hands.

Is the US border infrastructure effective?

The situation at the border continues to be a source of concern for residents and authorities alike, raising questions about the effectiveness of the existing border infrastructure and the challenges faced by border patrol officers in addressing the influx of migrants. As debates surrounding immigration policy persist, the stories of individuals like Shuster and Silvas shed light on the complex and evolving dynamics of life along the border.

Joe Rogan’s podcast no longer number 1 on Spotify; Trump aims to be on air

Spotify

The Joe Rogan Experience has been the number one show on Spotify for the longest time. The super popular podcast has however dropped to number two this week thanks to Trevor Noah’s new podcast titled What Now? With Trevor Noah.

The podcast premiered on November 8 and Noah’s first guest was Dwayne Johnson. The podcast made headlines due to the conversation where Johnson said that political operatives had visited him last year about potentially running for the White House.

Rogan and Spotify

Another strong contender in the podcast segment is Jason Kelce’s New Heights. As of today New Heights is in fact at number 1. Serial Productions The Kids of Rutherford County is at number 2 and Trevor Noah’s podcast is at number 3.

According to the New York Times, Joe Rogan’s podcast with Spotify is actually worth more than $200 million. The contract will expire in 2024 and there is no indication about whether there will be a renewal or not.

Donald Trump has been pushing to appear on Joe Rogan’s podcast since July according to a report from The Daily Beast. Apparently Trump started pushing for this after meeting Rogan at a UFC event in Las Vegas.

Trump’s campaign advisors have also told the publication The Messenger that his camp has been repeatedly trying to get on the show.

Trump bigger than media?

“Perhaps the only person bigger in the new media world than Joe Rogan is Donald Trump and the whole idea that the two of them would be together at long last – it would be an incredible audience,” said one Trump advisor.

In the past Rogan has mostly focused on interviewing third party and independent presidential candidates. Rogan said in August that he would like to have Donald Trump on the show to discuss the “deep state”

He said he would ask Trump questions like “What’s the machine like? What’s the deep state really like?”

However Rogan has also reiterated several times in the past that he was not a Trump supporter and that is why he has rejected offers to interview the former President.

The actress shared that she has zero judgement for anyone doing anything. She makes it clear that although she doesn’t condemn anyone who choose to have such operations done, she doesn’t see herself taking that path. Humorously, she jests about envisioning herself resembling a leather bag in the future.

Barrymore: Fear of plastic surgery

Barrymore admits her reluctance towards plastic surgery stems from her fear of becoming fixated on it due to her addictive personality. She worries about falling into a pattern of continuously seeking alterations. Barrymore said she might continue to chase it, getting this and that done. Instead, she focuses on beauty products, sharing her favorites during her well-known #BeautyJunkieWeek on social media, emphasizing her genuine preference for skincare and hair care.

Despite dyeing her hair so frequently that she’s uncertain of her natural color, Barrymore remains untroubled by the aging process. She views it as a testament to life and promotes embracing it positively. She emphasizes that good health holds more significance than anything else, especially during challenging times, noting that having good health enables attention to other aspects of life, including beauty, but ultimately considers it the utmost priority.

Health is the main goal

In her words, Barrymore said that if one was alive, they are living and that’s a really good thing. To embrace aging is such positive, healthy messaging. She added that having good health is the main goal above all else.

When there is danger, health truly becomes more important than everything else, according to her. “You can concentrate on so many other things, including attractiveness, if your health is good. However, it is actually the most crucial factor of all.”
