Man says he’ll only go to Starbucks every four months after paying $8.30 for a drink

Nobody expects that coffee at Starbucks would be cheap, but for one man, forking over $8.90 for one Frappuccino order warranted an online complaint.

When prices were lower, he used to treat himself to Starbucks every week, but with today’s prices, he says he can only go every four months or so.

Food prices have been on the rise since late last year, and people have complained over having to pay more for economy rice, chicken, and other items at grocery shops and food stalls, or that servings have gotten smaller.

But Starbucks is, after all, a multinational firm with a net worth around $150 billion, so maybe they can afford not to raise prices so much? Just saying.

A netizen named Goh Yu Rong posted a receipt for a White Mocha Frappuccino Venti $8.30.

The price had originally been $8.80 but he got a 50-cent discount as he did not need a mug for his drink.

He captioned his photo with, “Use to be quite affordable at $5++. Now it has went up to $8.90 without mug. Will come maybe once every 4 months from now.”

The receipt showed that he had placed his order at the coffee chain’s outlet at The Central in Clark Quay on Saturday (Sent 17).

While many commenters on his post agreed that food prices have indeed gone up, some told the poster that Frappuccinos at Starbucks have not cost $5 for a long time now.

Mr Goh admitted to one commenter that the price he had quoted for the Starbucks drink was from eight years ago.

When other netizens pointed out that Starbucks doesn’t just sell coffee but a lifestyle experience, he disagreed.

Mr Goh pointed out that he had once bought coffee there weekly, but over the years, as prices went up, he has gone less and less.

Another commenter reminded the poster of the high inflation rate lately.

Others suggested that it would be better to brew their own coffee at home, or else choose cheaper coffee shops.
