Malaysia – A Malaysian man confessed feeling humiliated after his girlfriend ordered the cheapest item on the menu during dinner with his friends and their partners.

The man took to social media to “confess” about his girlfriend’s character, sharing his experience on Facebook page UTAR (Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman) Confessions 2017/2018 on Sept 13, which has gone viral recently.

At the beginning of his post, the man said that his girlfriend “did not know about etiquette and protocol,” therefore her behaviour makes him feel “humiliated,” causing him to “lose face” with his friends.

Furthermore, the man said that she would appear close to tears each time he told her to behave properly, making him feel like the bad guy and a bully.

He highlighted a recent incident when dine-in restrictions in Malaysia were lifted for vaccinated individuals.

The man decided to go out for dinner with his friends and their girlfriends.

“I brought my girlfriend so that she can get to know my friends,” he said.

They went to a restaurant serving Western food.

The man wrote, “We were discussing what to order, and my girlfriend said she wanted to order the fish and chips. My friend who’d been to the restaurant before warned that the fish and chips was not nice as the quality of the fish they used wasn’t good. He recommended the short ribs instead.”

His girlfriend replied that it was too expensive, immediately annoying the man.

“I felt annoyed. Do you mean I can’t afford to pay for a dish that costs slightly over RM60 (S$19.50)? I’ve been working for a year; I can occasionally splurge on good food if I want to,” he wrote.

He said he felt embarrassed when the rest of the group “all turned to look at us” after hearing his girlfriend’s reply.

“You know how humiliated I felt?” he said, noting that her actions “made him feel sia suay (disgraced).”

“I helped her out by explaining that she doesn’t really eat beef,” he noted.

After looking at the menu, he confirmed that she chose the fish and chips because it was the cheapest item, costing about RM20.

He complained about her “usual pattern of being afraid to waste money.”

Touching on the food she ordered, the man said it was “tasteless and seemed more like food for dogs.”

He said that his girlfriend’s behaviour made him feel poor in front of his friends.

When he brought it up with her on the way home, she got upset, looking like she was about to cry.

The man said he wanted to “teach her a lesson” in finding another way to express her opinion about something.

He said this was not the first time she reacted this way, adding that her frugality was due to her coming from a low-income family.

At the end of “confession,” the man said it would be hard for the two of them to get along.

Meanwhile, his statements backfired as members of the online community said he didn’t deserve the woman.

“Wait until she orders A5 wagyu beef, see if you are still able to afford it,” said a netizen, urging him to break up with her.

Others noted that they wished they could meet a woman like her. /TISG
