A 25-year-old lorry driver was arrested this morning after three pedestrians were killed in a traffic accident at Ang Mo Kio Ave 8, near Yio Chu Kang MRT, around 9.30am. The lorry reportedly “came hurtling” towards the pedestrians and collided into an SBS Transit Bus, besides hitting the pedestrians.

According to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), two of the victims had to be extricated from underneath the lorry. All three pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver’s father, Mr Xu Hsu Jing, told reporters that his son told him that he suffered sudden vision impairment before the crash occurred: “My son said his vision went blurry and that he couldn’t see anything before the accident happened.”

Mr Xu is still waiting to see his son who has been conveyed to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital “in a serious condition” according to the SCDF. Mr Xu added that the extent of his son’s injuries remain unclear but the police – who have arrested his son for causing death by a negligent act – have interviewed his son and himself.

SBS Transit confirmed that none of the passengers on their bus that was hit by the lorry suffered any injuries even though the front-facing window of the bus had been smashed by the impact of the accident: “Our bus was stationary at a traffic junction when a lorry came hurtling and hit three pedestrians and our bus. None of our passengers were injured. Our hearts go out to the family of the pedestrians.”
