Malaysia ― It’s easier now to showcase your talent as there are many available platforms for people to perform, and it is not uncommon to find people rising to stardom overnight.

One of the platforms available is TikTok, or Douyin for China. However, as there are others who also use the platform to showcase their talents, you have to be really outstanding to stand out from the crowd.

There is a variety of videos on Douyin and one popular genre is to do covers of songs. Malaysian Douyin user “It’s Jiner (是金儿啊)” stole the show in this genre. This girl’s popularity shot up after her brief cover of “Self-Entertainment (自娱自乐)”.

“It’s Jiner (是金儿啊)” uploaded a 17-second video of the song “Self-Entertainment (自娱自乐)” on Sept 11. Even though her video only covered the chorus, it was enough to catch the attention of the audience. In less than two weeks, her video has got over 2.75 million likes.

According to Hype.my, the girl’s clear voice and confidence in playing impressed the audience and left them wanting for more.

Netizens asked the Douyin user to upload the full version, stating it wasn’t enough. “I fell in love after listening to it,” one said.

Others praised her voice and her looks. “(Your) singing is sweet and (you) look beautiful,” a comment read, with another saying: “So sweet!” One netizen even exclaimed: “It’s true that Malaysians sing well!”

The Douyin account “It’s Jiner (是金儿啊)” is run by Jiner Tay (戴金儿). There’s not much information available about her except that she studied in SMJK Convent Datuk Keramat during secondary school and resides in George Town, Penang.

There are not many posts on her Instagram account either, but a lot of her shots show her laughing and smiling. Her cheerful disposition appears to have carried over to her singing, as she smiles even as she performs. Tay truly looks happy when she’s performing. /TISG
