Yet another domestic helper tried to commit suicide by jumping off the 4th floor unit at Block 153 Bishan Street 13 last week. Thankfully, the Filipina helper named Rachel survived the attempt to end her life and only suffered a fractured leg and bruises.
Eyewitnesses spotted Rachel lying at the foot of the HDB block around 9am last Sunday. One witness, 70-year-old Mdm Zhou, told the Chinese daily that Rachel looked weak and in pain and that her hands were shaking.
The helper, who had been working at the Bishan flat for about a year before the incident, was quickly conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital where she received treatment.
When contacted by reporters, Rachel revealed that she has no recollection of what prompted her to jump out of the flat: “My memory stopped the night before. I was preparing dinner then I have no idea what happened after that. When I woke up I was in hospital.”
The Embassy of Philippines in Singapore has been informed of the incident and has revealed that Rachel will be deported to her home country for further treatment. Rachel’s employer has terminated her contract and police investigations are ongoing.
This latest case occurred just a few weeks after another foreign domestic helper was seen standing precariously on the ledge of an eighth floor unit at Blk 557 in Choa Chu Kang, late last month.
According to an eyewitness, the helper crawled out of the unit’s kitchen window and stood on the tiny ledge before crouching to sit on the ledge, in what is believed to be an attempt to end her own life.
In April, a topless helper dangled out of a second-storey flat window at Block 233 Simei Street 4 and fell down despite her neighbours’ best attempts to help her. While some believe that the woman fell while trying to do chores, there is speculation that the helper fell in an attempt to end her own life:
