Thousands of people turned up for different National Day events across Singapore on Tuesday (Aug 9), which is unsurprising, given the very low-key celebrations from the past two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Large crowds gathered in many places, and one TikToker caught a massive throng on video at an MRT station on Tuesday night.
The crowd there was even bigger than the one that gathered to watch the fireworks, opined TikToker @yule3xiaohahaha
@yule3xiaohahaha Have you ever Q from outside the mrt? I had my first experience. #NDP2022 #nationalday2022 #tiktoksg #singapore #crowdmoments
“The crowd watching the fireworks cannot be compared to… the crowd waiting to onboard the mrt station,” he wrote, setting the video clips to Katy Perry’s “Firework.”
Indeed, the number of people waiting for the trains looked pretty huge, and the TikToker explained that it was because the fireworks had just ended.
“Have you ever Q from outside the mrt? I had my first experience. #NDP2022 #nationalday2022 #tiktoksg #singapore #crowdmoments,” the TikToker wrote.
The Singapore Police Force said in an advisory posted on its Facebook account at around 7:30 on Tuesday night that Esplanade Waterfront, Fullerton Waterfront, and Marina Bay Sands Waterfront had reached maximum capacity, adding that access to these areas had been closed.
“Members of the public are advised to avoid these areas,” the police added.
The National Day Parade 2022 was held at The Float @ Marina Bay, and the fireworks display took place at the floating platform.
More than 25,000 people turned out for yesterday’s celebrations, AsiaOne said.
Some commenters on @yule3xiaohahaha’s video said they were glad they stayed at home.
A netizen who saw the crowd at the MRT station decided to take the bus instead.
The crowds the TikToker had captured were so massive that some commenters compared them to “JB custom(s) on weekends.”
“At this point, just walk home better,” wrote another.
