The weather did not dampen the spirit as former Workers’ Party chief Low Thia Khiang joined Aljunied GRC and Hougang SMC members of parliament for community outreach at the Hainanese Village market and food centre.
Out in full force, to promote the party’s newsletter The Hammer, present were Leader of Opposition Pritam Singh along with his fellow parliamentarians Sylvia Lim, Faisal Abdul Manap, Leon Pereira, Gerald Giam and Dennis Tan.
“It was a rainy morning today but that didn’t stop Team Workers’ Party from gathering up again for Hammer outreach at Hainan market in the Paya Lebar division of Aljunied GRC, whose MP is Sylvia Lim,” posted WP on their Facebook page.
The front page of the newsletter featured a write-up titled, ‘Why the GST hike is not necessary.’ It is a position that the party has taken earlier in the year in Parliament by Pritam.
“Supply chain disruptions are having an outsized impact on people’s purses. There is a real concern on the ground that the announcement to raise the GST will lead to price rises across the board,” said the Leader of Opposition.
This sentiment was echoed by Sengkang GRC MP Jamus Lim who feels that the GST hike is particularly ‘ill-timed because it holds the potential to stoke already-elevated inflation.
“While the direction of inflation in the future is anybody’s guess—economists have a particularly dismal track record of predicting price dynamics, one that would make a weather forecaster blush—it would not be surprising if inflation remains elevated through year-end,” said Jamus during the Budget 2022 debate.
“Supply chain constraints have not resolved as quickly as previously anticipated. Energy prices are high, and could rise more in response to geopolitical tensions and the likelihood of global sanctions”.
The WP has also uploaded a video on their party’s TikTok account thehammertok showing Sylvia interacting with a group of residents, and they were asking whether Pritam is around during the walkabout.
