SAN FRANCISCO: Singapore’s coding community takes the lead in Asia-Pacific growth, surpassing even India, according to a recent report from GitHub. The findings, released during the GitHub Universe conference in San Francisco, indicate a significant surge in coding participation in the city-state.

Nearly one million residents in Singapore, constituting one in six of the population, have embraced coding. This represents a remarkable fourfold increase from 260,000 in 2019, underscoring Singaporeans’ growing interest in programming skills. The local coding community witnessed a notable 39% growth in the 12 months leading up to September, outpacing India.

GitHub’s Insights and the Growth of Singapore’s Developer Community

GitHub’s data, derived from unique user logins in Singapore, provided valuable insights into the growth of the city-state’s developer community. The report was revealed during the GitHub Universe conference, drawing attention from 2,100 tech enthusiasts over two days.

While an estimated 200,000 software developers are in Singapore, GitHub’s data includes members contributing to analytics, design, or deployment of computing commands, not exclusively writing code, as reported by The Straits Times.

GitHub, a platform utilised by 93% of global software developers, has become a key player in tracking and analysing developer trends.

GitHub’s Shift Towards an AI-Powered Developer Platform

At the conference, GitHub’s Chief Executive, Thomas Dohmke, and other presenters introduced a suite of generative artificial intelligence (gen AI) tools, marking a strategic shift towards an “AI-powered developer platform.” Acquired by Microsoft in 2018, GitHub has maintained an edge over competitors through its partnership with OpenAI, in which Microsoft invested over US$10 billion (S$13.6 billion) for first rights to its renowned gen AI technology, ChatGPT.

Dohmke described gen AI in coding as a “fundamental shift in software development.” The emphasis on natural language aims to provide a more expressive way for humans to interact with code, unlocking a new wave of software developers and enhancing productivity for existing developers.

GitHub Copilot Chat and Future Developments

GitHub’s upcoming launch of GitHub Copilot Chat, a text-prompt addition to GitHub Copilot, is set to further enhance the coding experience. The multi-language chatbot, scheduled for release in December, acts as a supportive companion to coders, offering suggestions, completing code lines, and troubleshooting alongside them.

GitHub plans to introduce a personalised Copilot version for enterprises, priced at US$39 per user a month, by February. According to the company, GitHub Copilot has already demonstrated its effectiveness, raising developers’ productivity by 55%. Singapore, ranking 10th globally for contributions to gen AI projects on GitHub, is expected to swiftly adopt these innovations.

Ms Sharryn Napier, GitHub’s vice-president for Asia-Pacific, expressed confidence in Singapore’s tech sector, stating, “In my experience, Singapore has always punched above its weight, particularly in the technology sector.”

Analyst Thomas Murphy from research firm Gartner highlighted GitHub’s strategic move to offer Copilot Chat to subscribers at no additional fee, adding perceived value to its core product. GitHub’s revenues are anticipated to rise fivefold to US$5 billion within the next five years, according to Bernstein Research managing director Stacy Rasgon.

While GitHub has traditionally been seen as a strategic player rather than a primary revenue driver, the platform’s evolution and integration of AI technologies position it for substantial growth. Despite not being listed in Microsoft’s 14 product revenue lines, GitHub’s potential for revenue generation is becoming more evident.

Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, shared insights during an analyst briefing in October, revealing that over one million users from around 37,000 organisations now pay to use GitHub Copilot for business. UOB staff prevents 80-year-old woman from being scammed $40K by her “grandson”

SINGAPORE: In a commendable display of vigilance and quick thinking, two women working at the UOB branch in Bendemeer prevented an 80-year-old woman from falling victim to a scam orchestrated by an imposter posing as her grandson.

The incident was recounted at a crime prevention event at UOB Plaza on Thursday (9 Oct), jointly organized by the National Crime Prevention Council and the Singapore Police Force. In his speech, Gerald Singham, Chairman of the National Crime Prevention Council, specially commended the two staff: 29-year-old bank employee Grace Ng and 52-year-old branch assistant manager Jasmine Tay.

The pair revealed that the elderly woman arrived at the UOB branch accompanied by a foreign man in his 20s, who purported to be her grandson. Expressing her intent to transfer $40,000 to him, she claimed it was for safekeeping and to assist with medical bills. The suspiciously large sum caught Ms Ng’s attention, prompting her to question the elderly woman.

Concerned by the anomaly of a local elderly woman having a foreign grandson, Ms Ng discovered the man’s foreign student pass, deepening her suspicion. Unsuccessful in obtaining clarifications from the elderly woman, she promptly alerted Ms Tay.

The pair discreetly moved the elderly woman and the man to an area monitored by closed-circuit television for closer observation. Ms Tay, speaking to the media, noted the absence of typical grandparent-grandchild interaction between the two, a red flag that heightened their suspicions.

Ms Ng, attempting to engage the elderly woman separately, found that the “grandson” displayed no awareness of her absence. Alarmed by the accumulating signs of deception, the bank management swiftly contacted the police for assistance.

The police confirmed the man’s fraudulent identity, leading to his arrest. Investigations revealed that the elderly woman had received a call days earlier from someone claiming to be a government official, falsely implicating her in an investigation.

The night before the attempted transaction, the scammer took the elderly woman to an ATM, attempting to transfer the funds. Failing due to the large amount, they opted for a visit to the bank.

Speaking at the crime prevention event, Minister of State Sun Xueling emphasized that fraud is not confined to the online realm and urged vigilance in digital and offline transactions. She highlighted the evolving tactics of scammers and the increasing prevalence of malware-related scams.

Experts echo the importance of staying cautious, especially for older individuals who may be more vulnerable to scams. While technology offers convenience, it also opens avenues for exploitation, underscoring the need for continued public awareness and preventive measures.

How to Apply for Sale of Balance Flats

Assuming you have already checked your eligibility to apply for a SBF HDB flat, there are four simple steps that you need to follow through to complete the entire acquisition process:

Step 1 – Submit an HDB Flat Eligibility (HFE) application. Thereafter, you will receive comprehensive information of your eligibility for a new or resale flat purchase, CPF housing grants and HDB housing loan.

Step 2 – Upon receiving news of a SBF exercise by HDB, you can proceed to submit an online application within the application period for your ideal SBF flat. The submission deadline is usually within a week.

Step 3 – Wait for the results of the HDB ballot which could take up to one and a half months. Successful applicants will be invited to book a flat.

Step 4 – If you booked a fully constructed unit, you will be invited to sign the Agreement for Lease, make full payment of the flat and collect keys within a few months.

For flats that are still under construction, buyers will be invited to sign the Agreement and make a downpayment to confirm the sale. Full payment will only be required when the flat is ready for handover.

However, being a drag queen is more of being a performer, to some it can be considered as an art form. But it is apparent that a solid amount of social media users are vehemently disagreeing with allowing a small child to be a drag performer.

Vice did a lengthy video on explaining the boy being a drag queen. He apparently started his days with these sorts of performances when he was 4-years-old. His parents complained that child protective services were called when they found out he is a performer. Many feel that he wasn’t born to do this as he is just a child.

Conservatives appear to be coming in strong when it comes to protecting the rights of a child. Following that, some may see this as a likeness to child actors, which is another controversial topic. Furthermore, conservatives seem to also disagree with regular child beauty pageants as they can be detrimental to a small kid.
