SINGAPORE: Over 100 job openings await Singapore job seekers as Amazon Web Services (AWS) expands its cloud business and corporate functions in the city-state. The new roles, which include software engineering, machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and solutions architecture, will add to the company’s workforce of 2,500 employees in Singapore. However, The Straits Times reported that no timeline was provided for the hiring process.

The expansion comes as AWS opens its new 360,000-square-foot (sq ft) Asia Pacific Hub at IOI Central Boulevard Towers in Marina Bay.

According to Channel News Asia, the eight-story office can accommodate up to 3,000 employees—about three times the size of its regional office at Asia Square, Marina Bay, which opened in 2021 and accommodates up to 700 employees.

The new office houses over 100 teams, including Amazon.sg, Amazon Fresh, Amazon Advertising, Prime Video, and AWS.

AWS’ new Asia-Pacific Hub is part of its plan to invest S$12 billion more in Singapore’s cloud infrastructure from 2024 to 2028. Along with past investments, this is expected to add S$23.7 billion to Singapore’s gross domestic product (GDP) by 2028 and support around 12,300 full-time jobs in local businesses yearly, as stated in the company’s press release on Feb 12.

AWS services power major platforms in Singapore, including Trust Bank, Grab, PayNow, academic institutions, and government agencies.

According to The Straits Times, at the launch of the new hub, Senior Minister of State for Digital Development and Information Janil Puthucheary said that AWS’s expansion is a milestone for AWS and Singapore.

He said, “Tech companies such as AWS, with cutting-edge technologies and global expertise, are valuable partners in supporting Singapore’s digital transformation. With technologies like AI, the boundaries of our productivity can be pushed further and the competitiveness of our industries strengthened.”

AWS ASEAN managing director Jeff Johnson added that the new hub was meant to be a collaborative space. He said it is not just for AWS employees but also for customers, AI researchers, engineers, and universities to collaborate and drive digital transformation, acceleration, and innovation across Singapore and the wider region.

In 2023, Singapore’s digital economy contributed S$113 billion or 17.7% of the country’s nominal GDP. /TISG
