Amid a surge in passport applications resulting in longer processing time, Singaporeans are now putting off travel plans. However, netizens have noted that this issue can be avoided if people would renew their passports on time, as everyone had two years during the Covid-19 pandemic to do so.
The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) announced on May 11 that it was receiving over 7,000 passport applications daily, compared to 2,000 before the pandemic. Adding to the demand is the recent easing of travel restrictions and the upcoming school holidays. The average waiting time for passport processing is at least six weeks from the time of application, said ICA.
“(We) understand that many Singaporeans are eager to start travelling again, especially during the coming June school holidays. We are doing our best to handle the high demand, and our officers are working longer hours during this period,” it added.
The Straits Times reported on Wednesday (May 25) that people are now postponing travel plans as they could not claim their passports on time.
“Totally deserved it. Had a whole year to renew, but some people always must wait until last minute to rush and create trouble for others,” commented Facebook user Chloe Lam on the news.
“ICA is pretty efficient, to be honest. I renewed mine in January. Online application, received notice to collect from the post office within five days! No fuss and super fast. These people totally deserve the mess and long waiting time. Hope ICA dun overwork its staff; just let nature run its course. Those people who are rushing to travel due to herd mentality can slowly wait. Teach them a good lesson,” she added.
Others noted that ICA sends out a reminder notification usually nine months in advance to renew one’s passport; hence people have ample time to ensure their passports are valid.
“Realising that one’s passport has expired is not an excuse for not renewing one’s passport. ICA sends out a reminder by email or by post to passport holders whose passports are due to expire,” said Facebook user Au Kah Kay.
One Min Yah posted a lengthy comment describing her experience renewing her passport recently, which could serve as a reference for those planning to do so. /TISG
