Netizens respond to Desmond Lee’s statement that in coming years, govt will launch more BTO flats with shorter turnaround times

Despite Desmond Lee reportedly saying that in coming years, the government will launch more Build-To-Order (BTO) flats with shorter turnaround times, many Singaporeans are just not having it.

In response to the news, many have complained about the current state of BTO wait times, while others went so far as to share their personal critiques of Mr Lee’s time in office.

“Takes so long to build a public house,” wrote one netizen in response to recent news of a statement made by Mr Lee regarding future BTOs. Many zeroed in on the issue of the current waiting time for public housing, even citing their own personal experiences.

“It’s been four years…” wrote another, “My BTO flat is still stuck at level 5 and nothing much progressing…” The commenter then said, “(They’re) not solving the current building rate for completion…yet launching so many.”

Others called out Mr Lee, with one calling it a “lack of foresight.” Another brought up the high salaries of Singaporean leaders, saying, “Million dollar salary but can’t even plan better than in the 80s and 90s?”

One netizen went so far as to say, “Under him, housing policies (got) all screwed up. Please go back to basics and build HDB flats (where even a four-room design) can house three generations. The useless minister is responsible for high HDB prices and (putting) our younger generation into smaller BTO (flats) with high debts.”

Others questioned the timing of the news, saying, “Why did (it) occur to you (just) now (that) we urgently need to build to cut waiting time? Instant enlightenment?” Another said the statement came “just in time for the next general elections.”
