Car hugs too close to bus on Yishun Avenue, pays price by getting damaged

Singapore – A Toyota Prius got too close to a turning bus along Yishun Avenue, resulting in the car getting scratched and dented.

The importance of understanding a long vehicle’s rear overhang was recently highlighted on social media after an example of its occurrence led to a damaged vehicle.

“Toyota Prius keeps hugging close to a turning bus and eventually paid the price of getting his left side scratched and dented,” wrote Facebook page ROADS.sg on Friday (Nov 12).

It attached a video of the incident, showing the Prius getting too close to an SMRT double-decker bus while the latter was making a turn.

As the bus’ rear swiped the Prius, the car was seen wobbling from the impact.

The Prius driver appeared unsure where to go next after the incident before deciding to make a left turn at the junction.

“Understanding long vehicle rear overhand is crucial to staying clear of the outward swing during turning,” added ROADS.sg.

The incident is said to have happened along Yishun Avenue 9 towards Yishun Avenue 6 on Nov 9.

The overhang for long vehicles requires nearby motorists to pay close attention, especially if the turn is at a 90-degree angle.

ROADS.sg explained that the pivot point of a long vehicle is at the rear wheel, creating a rear overhang during a turn.

When the vehicle turns, it needs more space or clearance at the rear to accommodate the longer wheelbase.

In response to the video, members from the online community hoped that the bus driver wouldn’t be sued for damages as the Prius did not keep to its lane, to begin with.

“I certainly hope he (Prius driver) hasn’t got the cheek to assume he is right and proceeds to claim damages from the bus company!” commented Facebook user Carol Chia-Norquoy.

“Thank you to the cam car driver to provide this video. Bus uncle is saved,” added Facebook user Do DoHouse.

“Lots of drivers, after passing, forgot about it. And they will blame the large vehicles for not giving way to them. Self-entitlement sickness set in,” a netizen noted./TISG
