Mr Low Thia Khiang announced at the Workers’ Party’s 60th anniversary dinner that he will not contest for the post of secretary-general at the next internal party elections.

The position of secretary-general is the highest position in the political party. Mr Low has been at the helm of the party since 2001. Mr Low expressed confidence that the political party has a new generation of capable leaders who are ready to take over.

Mr Chen Show Mao unsuccessfully tried to unseat Mr Low from the top post in June last year. Mr Low welcomed the challenge as healthy and necessary for party renewal.
