Dear Editor,
I read with interest the commentary, “In an ever more uncertain world, what makes Singapore, Singapore?”(TODAY, June 9)
Firstly, when we wish to know and anticipate the present turbulent, capricious and uncertain world order which is full of superpowers’ struggles, conflicts, and war around the region, we also need to grasp well our own country’s position.
In short, Singapore should deepen our studies and analysis in the following subjects:
Strategic location
Geographically, Singapore is a cosmopolitan city; or an island state with a small area of 728.6 sq km. If under the circumstances of any war, it is a strategic place contested by all strategists. Hence, no matter what, Singapore can’t afford to have war, its consequences will be very destructive and incalculable.
Foreign policy
In view of Singapore’s strategic location, regardless of whether the world order is ever-changing, capricious, and unpredictable, it’s paramount importance that Singapore must always maintain and review its foreign policy of neutrality, non-alliance and pragmatism.
Defence enhanced by total defence
Singapore has definitely moved in the right direction by establishing robust armed forces since its independence. Down the road of nation-building, it is fortunate that with the foresight and sagacity of the Government, Singapore has recognised the urgency and necessity to adopt enhanced steps by further strengthening and upgrading its defence to the total defence. The recent Ukraine war has proven the significance of our total defence.
Anyway, these will greatly consolidate and affirm Singapore’s position as the global financial and commercial hub.
Political stability and rational policies
Singapore’s consistency of political stability and rational policies are the key pivot to upholding economic security, social equality, harmony, cohesion and security, as well as dealing with unpredictable and unprecedented virus diseases. For example, Singapore has successfully weathered the rage or outbreak of SARS in 2003 and the current ongoing COVID-19 for two years.
Nevertheless, Singapore needs to continually uphold its open, consultative, tolerant and inclusive governance or administration. This will facilitate and encourage freedom of expression, thinking, discussion and open debate or public discourse for the benefit of the people and nation. Therefore, it is no scientific proof, illogical and unlikely that open, rational, and fair debates will lead to social polarization.
