Flames could also be seen through the unit’s windows.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus sets proceeded into the unit to conduct firefighting. Simultaneously, they conducted forced entry into a bedroom and rescued the two persons from the ledge by bringing them in to safety,” the SCDF said in its post.

The firefighters were able to extinguish the flames found inside the bedroom of the unit with the use of one water jet.

“A person was found inside the fire-affected bedroom and was pronounced dead at the scene” by a paramedic, the SCDF added.

Another of the unit’s residents had been able to leave the premises before the firefighters’ arrival but had to be brought to Singapore General Hospital due to burn injuries.

The two people who were rescued from the ledge were examined by paramedics. However, they declined to be brought to the hospital.

Two firefighters experienced heat exhaustion and were conveyed to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital as a precautionary measure, but were later discharged.

An additional 60 individuals living in nearby units were also evacuated by the Police as a precautionary measure as well.

The SCDF added in its post that based on preliminary findings, the cause of the blaze was of electrical origin from a Personal Mobility Device (PMD).

“SCDF would like to remind the public on the prevention of PMD fires with the following fire safety tips in the accompanying infographic.

Non-UL2272 PMDs and any form of modifications to PMDs pose a fire risk and threaten public safety. Owners of these devices are strongly encouraged to dispose of their devices at the appropriate recyclers,” it added.
