A stomach bug appears to have affected Chinese businessman Wang Xiaofei in the middle of a recent Douyin livestream where he was promoting his own product, a line of Szechuan cuisine. Due to his tummy troubles, he had to excuse himself to go to the toilet several times.

He tasted some boiled beef he had just made and then began experiencing stomach pains. To the surprise of the viewers of the livestream, he even needed to go to the toilet three or four times.

Mr Wang, 40, is the former husband of Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu. The couple, who have two children, were divorced last year after 11 years of marriage.

A report in 8days said that Mr Wang had been giving a live demo of ready-to-eat Szechuan dishes available at his restaurants.

The report also says that Mr Wang even assured viewers that his stomach problems were caused by a cold he caught the previous night, and not the food he featured on the live stream while assuring them of its quality.

The businessman added that Douyin, which is to China what TikTok is to the western world, requires vendors who sell inferior products to pay nine times worth of compensation. Mr Wang added that he is unable to afford this and that he was not earning from the low price he was offering on his livestream.

“If the boiled beef is expired, or if the products have any issues, I will refund you nine times the original price. Please rest assured [about their quality] and buy them; my stomachache is purely coincidental!” 8days quotes him as saying.

Earlier this year, Ms Hsu, 45, caught everyone by surprise, including her own mother, when she married an old flame, Korean musician and DJ Koo Jun-yup, 52, a few short months after she split from Mr Wang.

Hsu’s mum, Huang Chun-Mei, only learned of the marriage the night before it actually happened. This caused a rift between mother and daughter, which, thankfully, seems to have healed.

But Mr Wang seems to have moved on as well. He was rumoured in February to be dating Zhang Yingying, 26, a Chinese actress.

8days reported that the two were allegedly seen holding hands and even going on a holiday in Sanya with Chinese businesswoman Zhang Lan, Mr Wang’s mother. /TISG
