Singapore — Commenters cheered on TikTok user @guaizhuzhu who took the #showyourdegreechallenge on Monday (Nov 22).

“Show your degree, then show what you are doing,” is what the challenge is all about.

The TikToker, WL Ng first shows himself in an academic toga with his bachelor’s degree, and then in a coat and tie, from his PhD studies in the UK.

“PhD in Electronics,” the voiceover says.

In the next frame, he can be seen beside a white Mercedes Benz, and the words “Taxi Driver” can be seen and heard.

“You can’t believe but it was real!” he said in the accompanying caption.

The comments he received were supportive.

“Honest job,” wrote one netizen. ”Most importantly is you are happy at what you do. Life is not a competition.”

One woman commented that her husband had a similar story to tell. He has a diploma in management, she said, but now works as a Grab driver, and she is “still proud of him”.

“Everyone is important,” @guaizhuzhu replied, having said that “we are just providing services to the public”.

Many commended him for making an “honest living” and said they were glad that he is “happy”.

When asked by one commenter why he was working as a taxi driver, the TikToker replied that he “wanted to do something different” after having worked for 10 years in the tech industry.

In a response to a separate comment, he explained that he had previously worked as an engineer and a property agent, as well as a scientist.

When others asked WL Ng if he was just relying on his savings, implying that he really didn’t need to work, he corrected them, saying that he does have a family to support and that his savings will dwindle to nothing if he stopped working.

He also pointed out in another comment that he is a “Dr” due to his PhD.

And when asked why he isn’t teaching, he replied that it “isn’t his passion”.

In response to another comment, he said that attitude was more important than education.
