Blogger Andrew Loh has started a petition to urge the Government to not disregard and disrespect Mr Ong Teng Cheong as our nation’s first Elected President. Writing in his Facebook Mr Loh said he feels “strongly enough to do this, for what it’s worth.”
The petition contends that the Attorney General is wrong in advising the Government that Mr Wee was Singapore’s first Elected President simply because Mr Wee had exercised the powers under the Elected President scheme. It calls for the honour to be rightly bestowed on Mr Ong Teng Cheong instead.
“I don’t think we should change who is our president just because the AG said so, or just because some minister goes to Parliament and say so,” Mr Loh said.
He added: “There is the law, and the Constitution, and those must be the bases of deciding who is our first Elected President.”
Mr Loh’s post has garnered more than 170Â signatures in a few short hours since being launched.
He urged Singaporeans who feel the same as he does to consider supporting the call for the Singapore Government to recognise Ong Teng Cheong, and not Wee Kim Wee, as our nation’s first Elected President.
