MP shifts blame on performance-stress students face to school principals

In his maiden speech in the 13th Parliament, MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, Liang Eng Hwa, shifted the blame for students feeling stressed in our highly competitive school culture to principals.
In his speech the MP said, “I agree with Minister Ong Ye Kung that we should not be too obsessed with numbers. Often when I attend school award ceremonies, the principal’s speech and presentation sometimes really sounds like a shareholder’s AGM meeting, with a lot of performance indicators being shown”:
Mr Ong had earlier said in Parliament that there is a risk in Singapore that we excessively view ourselves in “numerical terms”, whether it is in scores or rankings – when what the nation needs is a “clear focus on what truly matters”.
