SBS Transit CEO who resigned over “personal indiscretion” earned $1.2 million last year

Netizens online have pointed out that SBS Transit’s outgoing CEO and executive director Gan Juay Kiat, who resigned from his top position in two weeks ago over “personal indiscretion”, earned a hefty $1.2 million in 2017.

The sum Gan earned in 2017 is slightly above what an entry-level minister typically makes ($1.1 million), according to the 2012 White Paper on “Salaries for a Capable and Committed Government”.

On 28 Dec 2018, Gan Juay Kiat tendered his resignation over “lapses in conduct” and “personal reasons”. That same day, a video supposedly showing the 61-year-old Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Overseas Scholar and President’s Scholar with several women with whom he allegedly had extra-marital affairs with surfaced on social media.

The video was taken by Kokusai Security, a firm which was hired by an unnamed person to follow Gan and capture evidence of infidelity.

Uploading the video of Gan with several women with the consent of their client, Kokusai Security said that Gan has “multiple affairs with subordinates/married women within a month” and that he carried on affair with “different women in Singapore during office hours/weekends and overseas”.

Gan is married with grown children.

University of Cambridge-educated Gan has been with SBS Transit for the past 11 years. He started out his career in the SAF where he rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. After retiring from the military, he held top positions in Government-Linked Companies (GLCs) like Times Publishing, CapitLand, and Ascott Group.

Gan joined ComfortDelGro in Feb 2006 as group corporate planning officer before he was appointed CEO and director of ComfortDelGro Bus.

In April 2007, Gan was made Chief Operating Officer of ComfortDelGro-owned SBS Transit. In 2009, Gan became executive director of SBS Transit. A year later, he became CEO of the transport operator.

Six years after that, in 2016, the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) awarded Gan with the Medal of Commendation for his contributions to the promotion of harmonious labour-management relations.

SBS Transit chairman told the press that “We have lost a good CEO, who has done much for land transport in Singapore.” after Gan tendered his resignation.
