Singapore — Ahhh, we go through great lengths for love, don’t we? And when we pull off what’s difficult with success, the rewards can be very sweet indeed.

A young Malay woman’s TikTok of handing an older woman—whom she refers to as her “future mil” with oranges while giving her new year greetings in Chinese has gone viral, with almost 200,000 views.

In fact, it is @amirahvgi’s most popular TikTok to date.

In it, she tells her boyfriend’s mother, “Xin nian kuai le, gong xi fa cai, shen ti jian kang, cai yuan guang jin,” wishing her a happy new year, prosperity and good health – as giggles and some coaching, presumably from the boyfriend, can be heard in the background.

Laughing, the boyfriend’s mum not only tells her to “climb as high as you can” this “tiger year” but adds, heartwarmingly, “You are the best,” while handing back the oranges plus a little red envelope.

“Good for your future,” the mother-in-law-to-be says.

“I finally did it,” wrote Amirah.

Amirah wrote in her caption this is the second year they are celebrating CNY.

Netizens noticed Amirah’s boyfriend’s mother’s sweet words, which she said brought tears to her eyes.

Apparently, Amirah isn’t the only one in the couple who is making adjustments, as she said in one comment that her partner is “embracing Islam.”

Some commenters who had gone through a similar experience happily reminisced.

Others pointed out that she is very lucky with her future mother-in-law.
