Singapore ― Subscribers of the streaming giant Netflix can expect fees to increase by S$1 to S$2 a month.

Over the next few weeks, the service behind the hit series Squid Game and Bridgerton will increase its monthly pricing plans.

A basic plan will cost S$12.98, up from S$11.98, while a standard plan will cost S$17.48, up from S$15.98.

The biggest increase will affect the premium plan, which will cost S$21.98 a month, up from S$19.98.

The basic plan only allows one screen for viewing, while the standard plan offers up to two screens simultaneously.

The premium plan offers up to four screens and ultra-HD viewing.

Although the new prices are already in effect beginning Oct 7, existing subscribers will receive an e-mail notification one month before the new fees kick in.

New Netflix subscribers will be charged the updated prices.

The price increase is the second for Singapore in less than two years, reported Straits Times.

In response to the news, members from the online community noted that there were not enough Asian movies available on Netflix.

“Most of them are very old movies which I could watch for free in Mewatch,” said Facebook user Beidi Zhang.

“They have the cheek to raise the price, yet their show is not up to date,” added another netizen.

Meanwhile, others admitted that the streaming service offered more variety in entertainment.

“As much as I’m against the price increase, I must say that Netflix offers much more choice of entertainment than our local channels and cable,” said Facebook user Ridzuan Osman.

“Prices do need to align with increased costs of content production. Same applies to maintaining quality standards for any product across all industries,” added Facebook user Jerome Ong.

Despite a sharp slowdown at the beginning of 2021, Netflix gained 4.38 million new subscribers from July to September, reaching 213.6 million users worldwide.

The Korean thriller Squid Game is reported to have assisted in the surge of subscribers, with 142 million households having already completed watching the survival drama series. /TISG
