On the heels of reports of a Singaporean woman in Thailand mistakenly eating cannabis in noodle soup because she thought it was kangkung, one Redditor posted photos of an HDB block with an eye-catching design.

Let’s just say the five-leaved design could easily be mistaken for something else.

“I spotted more kang kong at a new HDB plot,” wrote @daixhara on r/singapore on Monday (Sept 26).

Redditors identified the location of the HDB as along the upper Serangoon viaduct. It is under the purview of the Jalan Besar Town Council.

And while Redditors poked fun at the design, cannabis is something that Singaporean authorities take very seriously indeed.

Under the Misuse of Drugs Act, Cannabis is classified as a Class A drug.

The possession or consumption of cannabis can result in jail time of up to 10 years, a fine of as much as S$20,000 fine or both.

Persons found guilty of the illegal traffic, import, or export of over 500 grams of cannabis, over 200 grams of cannabis resin, or over 1,000 grams of cannabis mixture may even face the death penalty.

And last June, when Thailand legalised the cultivation and possession of marijuana and hemp for specific purposes, the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) issued a reminder to Singaporeans overseas that doing drugs is an offence.

The country’s sole Olympic gold medallist, Joseph Schooling, made the news late last month for having been caught taking cannabis overseas in May when he was on short-term disruption from full-time National Service (NS) to train and participate in the Southeast Asian Games.

Nevertheless, Singaporean Redditors found much to make fun of with the HDB block’s unusual design.

One commenter said, however, that the design does not depict cannabis at all, but a Japanese maple.

Left: Japanese maple leaf. Right: Cannabis leaf.

But one Redditor said that doesn’t really matter now.
