In a Facebook post, lawyer and opposition leader Lim Tean praised Indonesian President Joko Widodo as “A Humble Leader Who Is Propelling His Country To Her Rightful Place In History.”

Mr Lim pointed out on Wednesday (May 18) that the Indonesian President uses travels via economy class, and mentioned Mr Widodo’s recent trip to the US to meet Tesla CEO Elon Musk to discuss starting a Tesla base in his country.

“He did not stand on ceremony and insist that Elon travel to Indonesia to meet him, which the Rules Of The Game dictate,” wrote the People’s Voice leader, adding,” You don’t have to be a scholar or a natural aristocrat to be of service to your People as Pak Joko is showing the world. What you need is dedication and the heart.”

Mr Lim also posted a screenshot of a tweet from Malaysian entrepreneur Richard Ker, from a thread of “just some of the many things Jokowi is doing for his people & country. Indonesia is predicted to become the 4th biggest economy in the world by 2045. This also shows leaders with entrepreneurship background can really drive things forward,” Ker added.

Ker’s tweet included a photo of the Indonesian President on the cover of TIME magazine from 2014, where “A NEW HOPE” is written.

However, not everyone was all praises for Mr Widodo. Mr Lim’s fellow opposition leader, Mr Kenneth Jeyaretnam, the secretary-general of the opposition Reform Party, commented that the Indonesian leader “seems to be transitioning towards dictatorship.”

But the majority of netizens commenting on the post appeared to find his leadership admirable, especially because of his relatability and his humble, down-to-earth ways.
