Due to a buildup of traffic at various stretches of expressways, as workplace restrictions are eased, authorities are increasing ERP (Electronic Road Pricing) rates.

Members of the public responded that the increase was “an excuse” to “make more money” as ERP rates have increased in the past, yet the traffic situation has not improved.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has completed its latest review of ERP rates, noting it monitored traffic conditions in April and May 2022.

“Based on traffic speeds, 19 time periods across eight locations have been identified for ERP rate increases as speeds at these timeslots have fallen below the optimal speed range,” said LTA in a press release on Friday (May 20).

A total of 13 time periods across seven locations will see an increase of S$1 in ERP rates beginning May 30.

However, in view of the upcoming school holidays, ERP rates for six time periods across three locations will be implemented only after the school holidays, from June 27.

Consequently, 14 other time periods across five locations will see an ERP rate reduction during the June school holiday period from May 30 and revert to pre-school holiday rates from June 27 onwards, noted LTA.

“LTA will continue to monitor traffic speeds and congestion levels closely and assess if ERP rates need to be further adjusted.”

Netizens highlighted criticisms over the decision to increase ERP rates, noting this was “an excuse.”

“ERP has been raised for many years, and yet, the traffic has not been solved. Today, you are still using the same excuse. Try harder!” said Facebook user Carol Yeo.

“Till now, they still dun get it, no matter what those who need to go work will drive. Why not look into better WFH (work from home) options with MOM (Ministry of Manpower) to ease traffic instead of raising prices of ERP that have no effect after years of trying,” added another netizen.

“Another crappy reason to make money,” said a concerned individual, while another noted, “Increase ERP, road also jam, ownself say, ownself song. Just put in simple terms, la…want more money.”/TISG
