A private-hire vehicle driver who was nearly blinded in a chain collision alighted his damaged vehicle and chased after the lorry that caused the crash on foot, after the lorry driver fled from the scene.
The Chinese daily reported that the incident occurred on Sunday night around 9.30pm at the junction of Ang Mo Kio Street 44 and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10. The lorry was reportedly speeding as it turned into Ang Mo Kio Street 44 where it struck the PHV driver’s parked car.
The impact caused the lorry to swerve and hit another car, sending the car crashing into a tree and a ‘Slow Down’ road sign. The driver of this second car was badly hurt and nearly blinded, as the accident caused his spectacles to break and cut his eyelid and forehead. The victim, who was bleeding from his head, was conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
The lorry driver sped off from the scene, instead of stopping to help, while the driver of the first car tried to chase the lorry on foot.
The driver of the first car, 35-year-old James Ooi, told the daily that he had parked at the roadside to pick up some passengers when the collision occurred. He recounted:
“The passengers were badly frightened. I told them to wait for awhile and intended to exit my car to reason with the lorry driver.
“However, the lorry driver did not stop and even hit a second car. I immediately gave chase on foot for about 20 metres, but could not keep up.”
The driver of the second car that was struck later identified himself as Michael Ng after he posted photos of his mangled car at the accident site on Facebook. The 45-year-old revealed that he intends to sue the lorry driver when the police apprehend him:
