Lion City Sailors vs Borussia Dortmund: A Premier Matchup in Singapore's Jalan Besar Stadium

Singapore football fans will be in for a treat at the end of the year as Singapore Premier League champions Lion City Sailors will host eight-time German league winners Borussia Dortmund at the Jalan Besar Stadium on November 24.

Dortmund will be here as part of their BVB’s Southeast Asia Tour from Nov 22-26 that kicks off in Singapore. Following that, the 1997 UEFA Champions League winners will travel to Vietnam and Indonesia. The Singapore leg of the tour comes in the wake of several joint initiatives since the Sailors and BVB penned a two and a half-year partnership in July 2021.

“Today we mark a deepening of what has been a fruitful partnership with Borussia Dortmund, one of the football world’s top clubs, with the official announcement of a match that will see the Sailors test ourselves against a team that has won the UEFA Champions League,” said Sailors’ CEO Chew Chun-Liang during a media conference held on Friday, 30 September.

“Dortmund’s five-day tour to Singapore will witness so much more than just a football match. It will present us opportunities for a rich professional exchange in the facets of sports science, football medicine, video analysis, as well as digital marketing and fan engagement, and even a chance to contribute to the local community.”

The partnership has already witnessed Sailors Academy teams compete against their BVB counterparts as part of a six-week Europe training tour in December 2021. The club’s technical and corporate office staff concurrently visited Dortmund for a study trip which included attending the famed Der Klassiker – the highly-anticipated clash between Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

Several of Dortmund’s international stars will not be featured in this friendly match as they will be on international duty with their national teams at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar which kicks off on November 21.

Despite that, the Sailors’ and national team captain Hariss Harun looks forward to welcoming the German side to the Jalan Besar Stadium.

“We’ve played against some of Asia’s best at the AFC Champions League earlier this year, and this match will be a bit of a step up – against one of the best teams in Europe with some of the best young players too,” said Hariss, who is also the captain of the Singapore national team.

“It’s going to be a fantastic test for us, and the younger boys in the team are especially geared up for the match, and we’re all looking to put on a good show for our fans.”

Tickets for the match are on sale at SISTIC, and will cost between S$25 (Adult, Gallery) and $35 (Adult, Grandstand). Early bird discounts are available from September 30 to October 24, and Sailors members are able to purchase tickets at preferential rates.
