SG couple grow weed at home; going so far as to create makeshift greenhouse

A couple were arrested in Yishun yesterday (September 10) night, after the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) raided their house.

The pair of Singaporeans had built a makeshift marijuana, or weed, laboratory and greenhouse in a room of a HDB flat in Yishun, along Street 31.

According to a CNB report, the couple, a 44-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman, according to the CNB statement, owned glass drug paraphernalia, two pots containing cannabis plants, and printed and written instructions on how to cultivate cannabis pasted onto the walls of the room.

The pair had been growing one of the pots of cannabis for some time – approximately 3 weeks, judging by the plants’ size – before starting on the other. There was also a DIY greenhouse complete with UV lights set up in the room.

According to a CNB statement, officers were tipped off by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA).

ICA officers found “glass apparatuses” for smoking while scanning packages at the SingPost Centre in Paya Lebar.

If found guilty, the duo each face up to 20 years’ jail, a S$40,000 (about US$29,000) fine, or both.

According to CNB’s statement, “CNB would like to remind the public that cannabis is a Class A controlled drug listed under Singapore’s Misuse of Drugs Act. The consumption, possession, trafficking, import or export of any controlled drugs is an offence under the Misuse of Drugs Act. Cultivation of the cannabis plant is an offence under the same Act. Any person convicted of cultivating the cannabis plant may face a maximum of 20 years’ imprisonment or $40,000 fine or both.

Safeguarding Singapore’s borders remains ICA’s top priority. ICA will continue to conduct security checks on passengers, cargo and vehicles at the checkpoints to prevent attempts to smuggle undesirable persons, drugs, weapons, explosives and other contraband across our borders”. /TISG
